Peter McCoppin (born May 2, 1948, in Toronto) is a Canadian conductor and organist.
He studied conducting with Erich Leinsdorf, Lovro von Matičič, and Hans Swarowsky, and taught conducting at the Cleveland Institute of Music (1975-1978).
He was assistant conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (1978-1980), and conducted the Canadian Opera Company on tour in 1979. He was music advisor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as it recovered from bankruptcy (1988), music director of the Victoria Symphony (1989-1999), and music director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (1993-2000).[ citation needed ]
He was principal guest conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.[ citation needed ]
McCoppin has had virtually no conducting engagements with OCSM orchestras in almost a decade. [1] John Becker's repeated description of McCoppin as "Mr. Music" in his book "Discord: The Story of the Vancouver Symphony", makes it clear he views McCoppin's populist approach as superficial, self-serving and shallow. [2]
As a music director and despite Becker's view, McCoppin has consistently improved attendance and restored community support and financial stability, never having taken an orchestra through a "red-ink" season.[ citation needed ] As a guest conductor, McCoppin has led orchestras in Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart, and Mexico City, as well as all of the major orchestras in Canada.[ citation needed ] He has produced and conducted a recording of operetta arias with the American soprano, Sherri Seiden and the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) is a Canadian orchestra based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The VSO performs at the Orpheum, which has been the orchestra's permanent home since 1977. With an annual operating budget of $16 million, it is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada and the largest performing arts organization in Western Canada. It performs 140 concerts per season. The VSO broadcasts annually on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The orchestra is affiliated with the VSO School of Music, which was established in September 2011. Chamber music concerts by VSO musicians take place at Pyatt Hall on the VSO School of Music campus.

The Victoria Symphony is a Canadian orchestra based in Victoria, British Columbia. It is considered Vancouver Island's largest and best-known performing arts organization. Currently conducted by Danish conductor Christian Kluxen, the orchestra consists of 34 full-contract, and 15 part-contract musicians. Typically, the orchestra delivers more than fifty main series programs per season, as well as a two-week-long summer series. A highlight of the year for many Victorians was the annual Symphony Splash fund-raising concert, held on the Sunday of the August long weekend. Andor John Toth was an American classical violinist, conductor and educator with a musical career spanning over six decades. Toth played his violin on the World War II battlefields of Aachen, Germany; performed with the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini in 1943 at age 18; and formed several chamber music ensembles, including the Oberlin String Quartet, the New Hungarian Quartet, and the Stanford String Quartet. For 15 years he was the violinist in the Alma Trio. Toth conducted orchestras in Cleveland, Denver and Houston. In 1969, he was the founding concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra under Neville Marriner. Toth taught at five important colleges and universities, and recorded for Vox, Decca Records and Eclectra Records.
Louis Gardner Lane was an American conductor. He was born in Eagle Pass, Texas. He studied composition with Kent Kennan at the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his bachelor's in music degree in 1943, and with Bohuslav Martinů at the Tanglewood Music Center, and with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music. He also studied opera with Sarah Caldwell (1950).
Black conductors are musicians of African, Caribbean, African-American ancestry and other members of the African diaspora who are musical ensemble leaders who direct classical music performances, such as an orchestral or choral concerts, or jazz ensemble big band concerts by way of visible gestures with the hands, arms, face and head. Conductors of African descent are rare, as the vast majority are male and Caucasian.
