Philip John Morrison [1] (born 1 June 1977) is an English drift driver and businessman from Birmingham, England. He is one of the most successful drivers in UK drifting, having won the 2006 D1 Great Britain series and 2010 British Drift Championship and is co-owner of automotive parts company Driftworks.
Morrison started drifting in 2004, funding his interest in the sport by working for five years in a sixth form college as a technician. In 2006, Morrison won the D1 Great Britain Series in a Nissan 200SX S14. [2] In 2008, Morrison debuted a new car, a mid-engined Nissan Silvia S15 powered by a 2JZ-GTE engine from a Toyota Supra in the European Drift Championship. [3] He narrowly missed out on the 2009 EDC title, after spinning out in the Top 8 in the final round at Snetterton and handed the title to Mark Luney. [4] The following season, Morrison won the 2010 British Drift Championship title at Knockhill. [5]
The S15 was sold at the end of the 2012 BDC season, [6] to be replaced by a world first LSx powered Toyota AE86, built with the remnants of an ASCAR race car. [7]
Morrison is the co-owner of Driftworks Ltd alongside his business partner, James Robinson. The business was established out of a spare room in Morrison's home and has now grown into one of the largest suppliers of drift related parts in the UK, based out of a 12,000 sq ft facility in Tyseley, Birmingham. The Nissan 240SX is a sports compact car that was introduced to the North American market by Nissan in 1989 for the 1990 model year. It replaced the outgoing 200SX (S12) model. Most of the 240SXs were equipped with the 2.4-liter inline 4 engine. The KA24E had single overhead cams and the KA24DE had dual overhead cams. Two distinct generations of the 240SX, the S13 (1989–1994) the S14 (1994-1998) were produced, based on the Nissan S platform.
The Toyota Chaser is a mid-size car produced by Toyota in Japan. Most Chasers are four-door sedans and hardtop sedans; a two-door hardtop coupé was available on the first generation only. Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner. The technique causes the rear slip angle to exceed the front slip angle to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn. Drifting is traditionally done by clutch kicking, then intentionally oversteering and countersteering. This sense of drift is not to be confused with the four wheel drift, a classic cornering technique established in Grand Prix and sports car racing.
Formula Drift is a United States-based motorsport drifting series. Formula Drift, Inc. was co-founded by Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage in 2003 as a sister company to Slipstream Global Marketing, the same partnership that introduced D1 Grand Prix to the United States. The new entity would solely own, operate and launch the first official drifting series in North America. Formula D is not affiliated with the FIA series of formula racing championships.
Christopher Forsberg, is a self-taught, three-time Formula Drift Champion and Formula Drift World Champion race car driver from Doylestown, Pennsylvania who currently competes in the Formula Drift series in his Nissan Z (Z34) for NOS Energy Drink. He is the owner, driver and shop manager of Forsberg Racing.
Atsushi Kuroi was a Japanese professional drifting driver who competed in the D1 Grand Prix series for Team Toyo with River Side. He died on 2 February 2010 during the evening due to a motorcycle accident.
Daigo Saito is a Japanese professional drifting driver, currently competing in the D1 Grand Prix series and Formula Drift Japan for TMAR. He formerly competed in Formula DRIFT USA and World Championship series for Achilles Radial. He was the first driver to win the two drifting majors, D1GP in 2008 and Formula D in 2012.
