The Philharmonic Society of Selangor, also known as the Selangor Philharmonic Society or, colloquially, the Phil, [1] is an amateur choral and instrumental group [2] based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is one of Malaysia's oldest musical societies. [3]

History

The society was launched on 15 January 1958 by a group of eleven British expatriates [1] amateur musicians in the card room of the Selangor club with the aim of staging performances and encouraging the arts. [3] Its first conductor was Major Leonard Sharp, [4] and its first performance was The Mikado , in July 1958. It takes its name from the state that Kuala Lumpur was located in before the Capital Territory was created. [5]

Originally it was an auditioned choir but in 2009 it began to accept members without audition. [1] [3] In the 1980s it began to practise all year long rather than only in preparation for performances. [1] For the first 35 years of its existence, it performed only foreign works, but in 1993 it performed its first Asian-origin performance. [6] By 2005 it was regularly performing Malaysian works as well as Western ones. [7] As of 2015 the choir had up to 300 members [1] and had already staged more than 50 performances. Proceeds from its performances are donated to charity. [8] The choir has toured outside Malaysia, including in Australia and India. [9] [1]

Around 3638 athletes from 70 Commonwealth member nations participated at the games which featured 214 events in 15 sports with 34 of them collected medals.

Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus is a large choir based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The chorus consists of about 190 members from Sheffield and the surrounding area and performs between five and ten concerts each season. A regular venue is Sheffield City Hall, although the choir also performs concerts in the Bridgewater Hall and Leeds Town Hall as well as other national and international venues. The musical director is Darius Battiwalla, who has held the post since 1997.

Bristol Choral Society is a large mixed-voiced choir based in Bristol, England, founded in 1889. Currently conducted by Hilary Campbell, it has around 140 auditioned members. The choir stages at least three concerts annually at the Bristol Beacon in Bristol with professional orchestras and soloists, and another annually at Bristol Cathedral in addition to other performances and broadcasts in Bristol and further afield.

The KL Standard Chartered Marathon is an annual marathon event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was established in 1989. It is supported by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU), Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. In the 26th edition of the marathon in 2017, close to 36,000 runners participated in the event.

Malawati Stadium is an indoor stadium located in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.The stadium is located beside the Shah Alam Stadium. The stadium has a maximum seated capacity of 13,000 and is capable of housing different events including sports events, warehouse sales, concerts, exhibitions and talks in its fully air conditioned 50 × 50 meters square arena.

St Albans Bach Choir is an amateur choir based in the English cathedral city of St Albans. Since its founding in 1924 it has performed a wide range of choral music including but by no means limited to the great Bach masterpieces. It strives for the highest possible standards of music making, employing soloists of the highest calibre and professional orchestras. Performances are normally held in St Albans Cathedral. Currently, the Musical Director is Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music at the Cathedral.
