Philibert Smellinckx was a Belgian footballer born 17 January 1911 in Saint-Gilles, Brussels (Belgium), died 8 April 1977. [1]

Centre back for Union Saint-Gilloise, in the legendary Union 60 who were unbeaten in the league for 60 matches, between 9 January 1933 (Union-Lierse SK, 2-2) and 10 February 1935 (Daring Bruxelles-Union 2-0). [2] At this time, they were three times Belgian Champions, from 1933 to 1935.

At the same time, he played for Belgium from 1933 to 1938 and played 19 matches for the Diables Rouges, [3] including one match at the Italian World Cup. [4]

The 1933–34 season was the 34th season of competitive football in Belgium. The Belgium national football team qualified for the 1934 FIFA World Cup in Italy but they lost in the first round to Germany (2-5). RU Saint-Gilloise became the first club to win 10 Premier Division titles.

The 1958–59 season was the 56th season of competitive football in Belgium. RSC Anderlechtois won their 8th Division I title. Standard Liège entered the 1958–59 European Champion Clubs' Cup as Belgian title holder and became the first Belgian club to win a match in European competitions. They eventually reached the quarter-finals. RU Saint-Gilloise entered the 1958–60 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and reached the semifinals. The Belgium national football team played 7 friendly games.

RSC Anderlechtois won their 11th Division I title and joined RU Saint-Gilloise as the club with the most championship wins in Belgium. They also won the Belgian Cup final against rivals Standard Liège. RSC Anderlechtois entered the 1964–65 European Champion Clubs' Cup as Belgian title holder and for the first time the Cup holder ARA La Gantoise entered the European Cup Winners' Cup. RFC Liégeois, RU Saint-Gilloise and R Antwerp FC all played the 1964–65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The Belgium national football team started their 1966 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign by defeating Israel 1-0.

The Coupe Van der Straeten Ponthoz, also known as Coupe Ponthoz, was an international competition for football clubs from Europe that ran from 1900 to 1909. It was one of the first European club football tournaments and is considered a predecessor of club tournaments in Europe, namely the European Cup. It was named in honor of the donator of the trophy Carl van der Straten-Ponthoz
