Philip F. Myers (born June 24, 1949) is an American French horn virtuoso and pedagogue. In 2017, he retired from his post as principal horn of the New York Philharmonic and remains active as a soloist worldwide.

Early life and education

Myers was born in Elkhart, Indiana. He attended Carnegie Mellon University from 1967 to 1971, where he studied French horn with the renowned Forrest Standley. During the summers of 1970 and 1971, Myers attended the Blossom Festival, where he studied music with the principal horn of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Myron Bloom.

Career

From 1980 to 2017, Myers was the principal horn of the New York Philharmonic and frequently appeared as soloist with the orchestra. [1] Before arriving at the New York Philharmonic, he was principal horn of the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from 1971 to 1974, third horn of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1974 to 1977, and principal horn of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1978 to 1980. Myers is on the faculty at the Haute École de Musique, part of the Lausanne Conservatory in Fribourg, Switzerland. [2]

Myers released his first solo CD under Cala Records in 1998, which features music by Leonard Bernstein and David Amram, among others. Myers can also be heard on Take 9, featuring the horns of the New York Philharmonic and the American Horn Quartet., as well as a New York Philharmonic digital release, featuring a 2011 recording of Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1.

In August 2014, Myers was elected an honorary member of the International Horn Society at the 46th International Horn Symposium in London. [3]

He served as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, among other posts. Frank Xin Huang is a Chinese-born American violinist and teacher. Since 2015 he has been the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Previous to his position in New York, Huang was the first violinist of the Ying Quartet and a professor of violin and chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, then served as the concertmaster of the Houston Symphony from 2010 to 2015. Alan Baer is an American tuba player who is Principal Tuba for the New York Philharmonic. He has also been principal tuba with several other orchestras including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Christopher Martin is an American trumpet player who was named the principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic in May 2016 and began his tenure there in September 2016. He has also served as Principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2005-2017) and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (2000-2005), Chris was a New World Symphony Fellow, although briefly, in the Fall of 1997. The Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra (TYS) is an Oklahoma nonprofit arts organization founded in 1963 to provide advanced orchestral training and performance experience for young musicians in Northeastern Oklahoma. As of 2016, more than 200 students, ages 8 to 18, participate in the program’s two orchestras. The orchestra is composed of students from northeast Oklahoma communities and schools including Tulsa, Bartlesville, Owasso, Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Coweta, Grove, Oologah, Jenks, and Holland Hall, as well as home schooled children.

Erik Ralske is an American classical horn player. He has been principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 2010, following seventeen seasons as third horn of the New York Philharmonic. He was featured horn soloist of the MET's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle, and was a soloist on several occasions with the New York Philharmonic. He is also a member of the orchestra's Philharmonic Quintet of New York.

Darryl Kubian is an American composer, thereminist, violinist, and audio/video engineer. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by North American orchestras, such as the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and Omaha Symphony, and he has written soundtrack scores for the Wildlife Conservation Society, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Pangolin Pictures, NHK, CBS, The Learning Channel, and others. Darryl performs and records as a thereminist, including chamber and solo works by Herb Deutsch, Martinu, and others, and has also been a featured soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia of New York, and the NJ Symphony on theremin. He was the featured theremin soloist for the Lincoln Center Festival production of Danny Elfman's Music from the Films of Tim Burton. Darryl Kubian is a member of the first violin section of the NJ Symphony, and was the principal second violinist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Indigo Fox Media, Kubian's New Jersey–based audio/video production company, has recorded artists such as the Emerson String Quartet, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, members of the NY Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, and the Metropolitan Opera, among many others. He is married to violinist JoAnna Farrer.
