Philip Vermeulen is a Dutch artist whose work Boem BOem (English: Boom BOom) was featured in Museum Voorlinden in 2023.

Biography

Vermeulen studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and graduated summa cum laude from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague [1] in 2017. [2]

Vermeulen’s work has been acquired by the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, and exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst in Unna, as well as at W139, Sonic Acts, and Art Rotterdam.

In 2020, he was nominated for the Volkskrant’s Visual Art Prize. [3] During the same year, his immersive installation More Moiré² earned a nomination for the Golden Calf in the Best Interactive category at the Netherlands Film Festival, the most prestigious film award in the Netherlands. [4]

His piece Boem BOem was displayed in Museum Voorlinden in 2023. [2] [5] Boem BOem incorporates a mechanism that launches tennis balls towards sound boxes at 150 kilometres per hour. [6] Boem BOem was previously known as the Physical Rhythm Machine. [7] It was identified as the Artwork of the Week by de Volkskrant in late February 2023. [2]

Vermeulen's contributions are acknowledged in the publication "A Critical History of Media Art in the Netherlands" by Sanneke Huisman & Marga van Mechelen, published by Jap Sam Books. [8] This book sheds light on the pioneering figures in the Dutch media art scene.
