From 1999 to 2006, Gropper studied jazz with Jerry Granelli, Peter Weniger and David Friedman at the Universität der Künste Berlin.[ citation needed ] From 2000 to 2002 he played in the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer, and was the first tenor saxophonist of the ensemble. Gropper's own bands are Hyperactive Kid with Ronny Graupe and Christian Lillinger, Philipp Gropper's Philm (founded in 2011) with Elias Stemeseder, Andreas Lang and Oliver Steidle, and TAU (founded in 2013) with Philip Zoubek, Petter Eldh and Julian Sartorius.[ citation needed ] In addition, he is a member of the following bands European Movement Jazz Orchester, FUSK, Kathrin Pechlof Sextett, Uwe Steinmetz Stream Ensemble, Tobias Backhaus 6, Clave Azul, Chimaira and Pablo Held's Glow.[ citation needed ]
Since 2008 he was a member of the Jazzkollektiv Berlin. [2] From August 2013 to March 2014 he was a scholarship holder of the Foundation Bartels Foundation in Basel. [3]
The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an avant-garde jazz group that grew out of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the late 1960s. The ensemble integrates many jazz styles and plays many instruments, including "little instruments": bells, bicycle horns, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and various forms of percussion. The musicians would wear costumes and face paint while performing. These characteristics combined to make the ensemble's performances both aural and visual. While playing in Europe in 1969, five hundred instruments were used.

In the 2010s in jazz, there was a noted resurgence in the popularity of jazz, particularly in the United Kingdom, where new artists rose to prominence such as Sons of Kemet, Shabaka Hutchings, Ezra Collective, and Moses Boyd Young audiences overall also listened jazz moreso than before, with streaming services reporting a spike amongst people under 30. Part of this is attributed to the rise of streaming services, and part to fusions with other genres and collaborations between jazz musicians and popular artists in other genres, such as Kamasi Washington's work with Kendrick Lamar

He has played with Joachim Kühn, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Beat Furrer, Miroslav Vitouš, Dave Liebman, Wadada Leo Smith, William Parker, Evan Parker, Louis Sclavis, Joe Lovano, Peter Brötzmann and Tony Malaby.
Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, often called Luten Petrowsky, was a German jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer and author. He is considered the father of free jazz in East Germany (GDR). He was one of few jazz musicians permitted to play in the West already in the 1960s. Petrowsky played in the 1973 quartet recording Just for fun, the first of jazz musicians from both East and West. He took part in more than a hundred recordings between 1963 and 2016, with groups such as Synopsis and Zentralquartett, and with his singer wife, Uschi Brüning.
