Pierre-Yves Jorand

Pierre-Yves Jorand (born 20 May 1963) is a Swiss speed skier and sailor who has competed at multiple America's Cups.

Jorand joined North Sails Switzerland in 1984. [1] Jorand was also a speed skier and was European champion. [2] In 1984, he was the first skier to go faster than 200 km/h. [3] [4] He then represented Switzerland at the 1992 Winter Olympics, where he competed in the speed skiing event, which was a demonstration sport. [5] [6] On the morning of the finals, Jorand was warming up with a fellow competitor, Nicolas Bochatay, when Bochatay crashed into a snowmobile and died instantly. [7]

He joined Alinghi and was their technical coach at the 2003 and 2007 America's Cups. He was then a main trimmer on the catamaran Alinghi 5 during the 2010 America's Cup. Since then, he has sailed with Alinghi in the Extreme Sailing Series. [8]

In 2014 he joined the sailing selection committee for the Swiss Olympic Association. [9]

<i>USA 17</i> Racing trimaran

USA-17 is a sloop rigged racing trimaran built by the American sailing team BMW Oracle Racing to challenge for the 2010 America's Cup. Designed by VPLP Yacht Design with consultation from Franck Cammas and his Groupama multi-hull sailing team, BOR90 is very light for her size being constructed almost entirely out of carbon fiber and epoxy resin, and exhibits very high performance being able to sail at 2.0 to 2.5 times the true wind speed. From the actual performance of the boat during the 2010 America's Cup races, it can be seen that she could achieve a velocity made good upwind of over twice the wind speed and downwind of over 2.5 times the wind speed. She can apparently sail at 20 degrees off the apparent wind. The boat sails so fast downwind that the apparent wind she generates is only 5-6 degrees different from that when she is racing upwind; that is, the boat is always sailing upwind with respect to the apparent wind. The 6th Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2003. The winner, Alinghi, went on to challenge for and win the 2003 America's Cup.

Alinghi 5 is a 90 ft (27 m) (LWL), 90 ft (27 m) beam sloop-rigged catamaran built by Alinghi for the 33rd America's Cup.

Nicolas Bochatay was a Swiss speed skier who died during the 1992 Winter Olympics. Bochatay was killed when he collided with a snow grooming vehicle on the morning of the speed skiing finals. He was the nephew of Olympic skier Fernande Bochatay.
