Major General Pieter Hanekom SD SM MMM (born 1938 was a South African Army officer who served as IG SADF.

He matriculated in 1955 and joined the South African Army Gymnasium on 7 January 1956. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1958. Company Commander at 4 SA Infantry Battalion from 19591965. Instructor at Infantry School from 19651967. As a major he completed the Senior Staff Course in 1968. Directing Staff at the Army College in 19671968. Military Attaché to France from 19701983. SSO at Military Intelligence Division in 19741975.

He was promoted to rank of brigadier in Jan 1975. Director Collection at MID from January to October 1975. Defence Advisor in France from November 1975 to December 1979. He was promoted to major general in January 1980. GOC Northern Transvaal Command in January 1980 January 1982. Chief Director Counter Intelligence from February to December 1982. Inspector General Army during 19831986. Inspector General SADF from 19861993. He retired in February 1983.
