Pikes Peak Christian School (PPCS) is a coeducational private school located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. PPCS accepts students from two years old through the twelfth grade.

History

The school began as a Preschool and Daycare in 1981. The first elementary grade was added in 1985, the first middle school grade in 1989, and high school in 1999. The first senior class graduated in May 2003. PPCS is associated with the Church of Christ and is resident in the Eastside Church of Christ building. PPCS is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which receives no direct financial support from any institution or agency. [4] The school has been licensed by the Colorado State Department of Human services to provide a preschool program. [5]

Academics

PPCS has been accredited by the National Christian Schools Association (NCSA) since 1994. [6] All students are enrolled in art, music, and Spanish classes in addition to traditional core classes through the 8th grade. The school provides an international student program in the middle and high school levels, as well as an honors program and several AP courses in the high school. [7] [8] The school administers the Stanford Achievement Test to kindergarten through twelfth grade students. The 2010 overall school Stanford score was in the 89th percentile. [9] PPCS freshmen and sophomores take the PLAN and or PSAT test and juniors and seniors are directed to take the ACT and/or SAT tests. The PPCS 5 year average ACT composite score as of 2009 is 24.3. [10]

Athletics

The elementary and middle school athletic programs are members of the Christian Schools Athletic League in Colorado Springs. Students can participate in cross country, volleyball, basketball, and track. The high school is a member of the Colorado High School Activities Association and competes at the 1A level in the Black Forest League. [3] Students are able to participate in cross country, women's volleyball, football, cheerleading, basketball, baseball, and track at the junior varsity and varsity levels. 88% of high school students at PPCS participated in one or more sports in the 2009-10 school year. [11]

Extracurricular clubs and activities

Students currently have ability to participate in several extracurricular programs. Elementary students have opportunity to participate in Chess club, and Math club; middle school students may participate in Student Council, Matchwits, and some electives held during the school day. High School students have opportunities to participate in National Honor Society, Matchwits, Choir, Student Council, and Drama. The Drama department produces one play in the fall and one in the spring. Matchwits offers academic quizzing competitions in the Black Forest League, and PPCS varsity teams have competed at the 2A state level six times in the last seven years. [12]

United States Geography Championships

The United States Geography Championships, often abbreviated as USGC, formerly known as the United States Geography Olympiad, is a nationwide academic geography competition for primary and secondary school students in the United States. It was introduced during the 2012-2013 school year. It currently consists of approximately 105 National Qualifying Exam sites held around the United States and its territories, along with a certain number of international schools, and a National Championships held in Arlington, VA at the end of April. The National Qualifying Exam sites are held in conjunction with the high school-level regional and state tournaments of The National History Bee and The National History Bowl.
