Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of North America. It is 34 kilometres in length and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 km2 (167 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 km (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea; therein, Barbados is east of the Windwards, part of the Lesser Antilles, roughly at 13°N of the equator. It is about 168 km (104 mi) east of both the countries of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and 180 km (110 mi) south-east of Martinique and 400 km (250 mi) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados is outside the principal Atlantic hurricane belt. Its capital and largest city is Bridgetown.
Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados. Formerly The Town of Saint Michael, the Greater Bridgetown area is located within the parish of Saint Michael. Bridgetown is sometimes locally referred to as "The City", but the most common reference is simply "Town". As of 2014, its metropolitan population stands at roughly 110,000.
Barbados is a continental island in the North Atlantic Ocean and is located at 13°10' north of the equator, and 59°32' west of the Prime Meridian. As the easternmost isle of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies, Barbados lies 160 kilometres (100 mi) east of the Windward Islands and Caribbean Sea. The maritime claim for Barbados is a territorial sea of 12 nmi, with an exclusive economic zone of 200 nmi which gives Barbados a total maritime area of 186,898 km2 (72,162 sq mi). Of the total EEZ area 70,000 km2, is set aside for offshore oil exploration. A pending application to UNCLOS has placed for consideration a continental shelf 200 nmi to the east and south. To the west, most of Barbados' maritime boundaries consist of median lines with neighbours. These neighbours include: Martinique, and Saint Lucia to the northwest, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the west, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela to the southwest, and Guyana to the southeast.
The parish of St. Michael is one of eleven parishes of Barbados. It has a land area of 39 km2 and is found at the southwest portion of the island. Saint Michael has survived by name as one of the original six parishes created in 1629 by Governor Sir William Tufton.
The Kensington Oval is a stadium located to the west of the capital city Bridgetown on the island of Barbados. It is the pre-eminent sporting facility on the island and is primarily used for cricket. Locally referred to as "The Mecca" of cricket, it has hosted many important and exciting cricket games between local, regional, and international teams during its more than 120-year history.
Cave Hill, St. Michael is a suburban area situated in the parish of St. Michael. It is located about 4 km north-west of the capital city Bridgetown along the west coast of Barbados.
Crab Hill is a settlement in Barbados, at the northern end of the parish of Saint Lucy. The place was so named because large numbers of crabs would appear in the area during rainfall; people would catch the crabs and keep them as pets. The population is 727 (2018), which makes it the most populous place in the parish of St. Lucy. Crab Hill is the site of the St. Lucy Police Station. The Mount Gay North Stars cricket grounds are located in Crab Hill.
The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is a public radio and television broadcaster, located in Barbados. It was founded in 1963 as Radio Barbados.
Two Mile Hill is an area two miles (3.2 km) away from Bridgetown, in Saint Michael Parish, Barbados. The Two Mile Hill area was historically one of the railway stations on the island of Barbados. The Barbados Railway was a part of the island's colonial distribution network for the sugar cane industry while the country was under the control of Britain. The location no longer has a railway and is now instead known more for its Sherbourne Conference Centre.
Glendairy Prison, also called Her Majesty's Prison, was the correctional facility located in the country of Barbados. The prison, which housed up to 1,000 male and female inmates, was located in Station Hill, St. Michael.
The Wildey area of the Parish of Saint Michael located roughly 4 km east of Bridgetown, it lies on the border with the Parish of Christ Church. Normally a very busy area with the ABC Highway, Wildey is one of the main convergence points for vehicles travelling either towards the capital-city Bridgetown or towards points in northern Barbados. In recent years the area was reconfigured for traffic mitigation, the tri-directional split or fork in the highway formerly known as the "Wildey Y" was changed to only allow southbound traffic to turn left or right on to Wildey Road only. Northbound traffic must now travel on Wildey Road to Highway R road which brings traffic back to BET hill.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in the Caribbean. The diocese encompasses the entirety of the former British dependency of Barbados. The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, and a member of the Antilles Episcopal Conference.
Barbados sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The island nation made its tenth appearance as an independent nation upon its arrival in Beijing. Eight athletes across three sports and ten events represented Barbados, marking the smallest delegation in its history up to the Beijing Games. Its runners and swimmers advanced past the first rounds in their events in four of their nine events, although none advanced to their events' final rounds or medaled. The nation's flagbearer during the Beijing Games was swimmer Bradley Ally.
Pine Hill is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County, California. It is located 2.5 miles (4 km) south of downtown Eureka, at an elevation of 135 feet. The area is now part of unincorporated Eureka.
George Washington House in Barbados is a historic house where the future first U.S. President George Washington visited, in 1751. He was 19 years old at the time and traveling with his ailing half-brother, Lawrence Washington. In 2011, the property was designated as a UNESCO protected property within the World Heritage Site of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison area.
The Barbados Community College is a tertiary institution located on Eyrie Howells' Road, St. Michael, Barbados.
Masons Field is a 2.9 hectare Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Kingsbury in the London Borough of Brent. It was declared an LNR in 2013, it is owned by London Underground Ltd and managed by Brent Council on a 125 year leasehold.
Cerro Viejo is a corregimiento in Tolé District, Chiriquí Province, Panama. It has a land area of 59.5 square kilometres (23.0 sq mi) and had a population of 1,768 as of 2010, giving it a population density of 29.7 inhabitants per square kilometre (77/sq mi). Its population as of 1990 was 2,923; its population as of 2000 was 1,709.
Chimborazo is a populated place in the parish of Saint Joseph, Barbados. Chimborazo Hill in Chimborazo is one of this highest points in Barbados.
The Erdiston Teachers' Training College is located in Pine Hill, Bridgetown, Barbados. It is affiliated with the School of Education of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
