Pioc do Ride is a car-based dating show format broadcast on Irish language broadcaster TG4. A contestant must choose from three dates solely based on their car and its contents. [1]

The show became famous for the cruel twist at the end, where the chosen contestant can either choose to go on a date or take a voucher for a car service worth €250. The moment the contestant chose the voucher over the date in Episode 1, the video clip went viral across Ireland and also featured in news reports across the UK and as far afield as in the USA and China. [2]

The series consists of 13 episodes broadcast on Thursday nights starting in September 2015. Pioc do Ride was commissioned by Proinsias Ní Ghrainne and Laura Ní Cheallaigh and is aimed at the 15-24 age group. It is produced by Dave Clarke and Ciarán Deeney of El Zorrero Films and directed by Dermot O’Hanlon. [3] [4]

Contestants were sourced for the show in part through the dating app Tinder. [5]

Presenter

The show is presented by Áine Goggins from Dublin. Presenting the show has enabled her to fund her studies for a medical degree at Queen's University Belfast. Goggins is from Dublin and previously presented ‘Ó Tholg go Tolg’ also on TG4. [6]

Critical response

Speaking on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Bláthnaid Ni Chofaigh has criticised the show calling it "tacky". [7] Ray Foley, a radio presenter on 98fm called Pioc Do Ride the 'best programme on Irish TV ever’. [8] The Irish Times described the show as "perfectly daft". [9] Writing in the Irish Independent Ian O'Doherty called Pioc Do Ride "genuinely bonkers and charming". [10]

Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is an Irish fiddler and the lead vocalist for the Irish folk music band Altan, which she co-founded with her husband Frankie Kennedy in 1987. The Voice of Ireland is the Irish edition of the international TV franchise The Voice, a reality singing competition created by media tycoon John de Mol. The first series began airing from 8 January 2012 on RTÉ One. The coaches originally were Bressie, Sharon Corr, Kian Egan and Brian Kennedy. Kennedy left after the first series and was replaced by Jamelia. After the second series, Corr quit the show owing to other commitments and was replaced by Dolores O'Riordan. Sinéad Ní Uallacháin is an Irish journalist, actress, artist, podcaster, continuity announcer and radio presenter.

RTÉ's Home School Hub, or simply Home School Hub, and its companion show Home School Extra, was an educational television programme which was created in response to the closure of all schools during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland in 2020. Announced on 21 March, it began broadcasting on RTÉ2 on 30 March, aimed at children attending 1st–6th class of primary school. The first series ended on 19 June. A new series After School Hub began on 11 October, broadcasting in the afternoon to cater for children whose parents are working from home. The series finished on 19 March 2021.

<i>Beo ar Éigean</i> Irish-language podcast

Beo ar Éigean is an Irish-language podcast and radio show produced by Ireland's national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). It is presented by Gaeilgeoirí Sinéad Ní Uallacháin, Áine Ní Bhreisleáin and Siún Ní Dhuinn. The three discuss issues from their daily lives. The podcast is specifically produced in the Irish language, but is not about the language itself.
