The Directorate for Inland Waterways (Plovput) is a special organization of the Government of the Republic of Serbia responsible for maintenance and development of international and interstate inland waterways in the Republic of Serbia (the Danube, Sava, and Tisza rivers).
The Danube is Europe's second longest river, after the Volga. It is located in Central and Eastern Europe.
The Sava is a river in Central and Southeastern Europe, a right tributary of the Danube. It flows through Slovenia, Croatia, along the northern border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and through Serbia, discharging into the Danube in Belgrade. Its central part is a natural border of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. The Sava forms the northern border of the Balkan Peninsula, and the southern edge of the Pannonian Plain.
The Tisza or Tisa is one of the main rivers of Central and Eastern Europe. Once, it was called "the most Hungarian river" because it flowed entirely within the Kingdom of Hungary. Today, it crosses several national borders.
Plovput was established in 1963, under the name Federal Public Institution for Maintenance and Development of Inland Waterways. During the last half a century, Plovput implemented over 500 projects. Today, it has 101 employees.

International activities
Plovput is also active on international level. Our[who?] experts participate at working groups of relevant international institutions in the field of inland waterways (Danube Commission, International Sava River Basin Commission, UNECE – group for inland waterway transport, PIANC, International Hydrographic Organization, GIS Forum Danube). Plovput is a partner on international projects funded by the EU, on which it cooperates with other Danube administrations, creating strategic partnerships.
The Danube Commission is concerned with the maintenance and improvement of navigation conditions of the Danube River, from its source in Germany to its outlets in Romania and Ukraine, leading to the Black Sea. It was established in 1948 by seven countries bordering the river, replacing previous commissions that had also included representatives of non-riparian powers. Its predecessor commissions were among the first attempts at internationalizing the police powers of sovereign states for a common cause.
International Sava River Basin Commission is an international organisation with its permanent secretariat in Zagreb, Croatia. Sava Commission has been established for purpose of the implementation of the Framework Agreement on the Sava River Basin (FASRB), namely the provision of cooperation of the Parties to the FASRB, for realization of the following goals: establishment of an international regime of navigation on the Sava River, establishment of sustainable water management and undertaking of measures to prevent or limit hazards.
