Philippine Wireless Inc., doing business as PocketBell, was a telecommunications company which was the first to introduce pagers in the Philippines.
Philippine Wireless Inc. introduced PocketBell in the 1970s, becoming the first company to make pagers commercially available in the Philippines. From the 1970s until the mid-1980s, it virtually maintained a monopoly in the pager industry in the country. After the 1986 People Power Revolution which deposed President Ferdinand Marcos and installed Corazon Aquino as the new head of state, certain sectors of the Philippine economy was liberalized including telecommunications which allowed the entry of new companies in the pager industry. As much as 10 companies competed with Philippine Wireless at the peak of the pager industry in the country. [1]
A shareholder dispute within the Philippine Wireless in the 1990s which ended to the Santiago family gaining control of the company but this allowed PocketBell's competitors to break its monopoly. In the 1990s, PocketBell's main competitor was EasyCall. Another competing company called Digipage also entered the market in 1991. [2] Philippine Wireless along with EasyCall claim that they own 50 percent of the market share in the Philippine pager industry. [1]
The introduction of mobile phones with short message service (SMS) functionality in the late 1990s and the 1997 Asian financial crisis caused Philippine Wireless' to end its pager services. They planned to introduce two-way paging as a response to the introduction of SMS but failed to do so. [1]

Previously, it was one of the mobile and fixed-line telephone service providers in the Philippines. PCEV is 99.5%-owned by Smart Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT). The remaining 0.5% of PCEV's shares is owned by the Filipino investing public. Through PCEV, PLDT forms a consortium with Metro Pacific Investments Corporation to form Beacon Electric Asset Holdings, Inc. which is the majority owner of Meralco.
The history of AT&T dates back to the invention of the telephone. The Bell Telephone Company was established in 1877 by Alexander Graham Bell, who obtained the first US patent for the telephone, and his father-in-law, Gardiner Greene Hubbard. Bell and Hubbard also established American Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1885, which acquired the Bell Telephone Company and became the primary telephone company in the United States. This company maintained an effective monopoly on local telephone service in the United States until anti-trust regulators agreed to allow AT&T to retain Western Electric and enter general trades computer manufacture and sales in return for its offer to split the Bell System by divesting itself of ownership of the Bell Operating Companies in 1982.
During the administration of former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos (1965–1986) select businesses were favored and patronized by Marcos, receiving financial support, sole patronage, tax exemptions, and control over entire industries rendering these businesses as monopolies. Friends and relatives of Marcos acquired staggering wealth and economic power due to special favors and privileges extended by the administration. While Marcos associates enjoyed government bailout even during the decline of their firms, other businesses suffered high taxes, sanctions, and other unjust treatments that forced them to close up, or to sell their shares. The majority of monopolies linked to Ferdinand Marcos are managed by his close associates, also regarded as cronies by critics. Former First Lady Imelda Marcos insinuated that the Marcoses controlled the majority of the industries in the Philippines. In a 1988 interview, she stated, "We practically own everything in the Philippines—from electricity, telecommunications, airline, banking, beer and tobacco, newspaper publishing, television stations, shipping, oil and mining, hotels and beach resorts, down to coconut milling, small farms, real estate and insurance."
