Policy Research Institute is a think tank based in Banani, Dhaka, that conducts policy-based economics research. [1]

History

Policy Research Institute was established in 2009. [2] Sadiq Ahmed was one of the cofounders of Policy Research Institute. [2]

In September 2019, the Policy Research Institute received US$375,598 funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a 23-month research into digital financial inclusion. [3] [4]

In the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Policy Research Institute was ranked 93 on the South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific subcategory. [5]

Senior economist at the Policy Research Institute Ashikur Rahman Shanto, also an Awami League politician, credited Sheikh Hasina for maintaining a neutral foreign policy for Bangladesh in June 2023. [6]

In May 2024, Policy Research Institute published a study paper called Bangladesh's Domestic Resource Mobilisation: Imperatives and a Roadmap which called for reforms in Bangladesh to increase revenue. [7]

Ahsan H Mansur, an executive director of Policy Research Institute, was appointed governor of Bangladesh Bank after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. [8] [9] [10]

Fellows

Distinguished fellows of the Policy Research Institute are Haider Khan, M. G. Quibria, Md. Rizwanul Islam, Lutfey Siddiqi, Salim Rashid, and Siddiqur Osmani. [11] Senior fellows are Abdullah A. Dewan, Bashiruddin Ahmed, Badruzzaman Ahmed, Binayak Sen, Biru Paksha Paul, Garry Pursell, Hasan Moinuddin, Mafizur Rahman, Mohammad Tamim, M. Amanullah (Chanchal) Khan, M. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.

Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the Minister of Commerce in the third Mujib Rahman ministry under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and assumed the presidency of Bangladesh after the Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975. He praised the assassins as "sons of the sun" and put cabinet ministers loyal to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in jail. He was himself deposed by another coup, less than three months later on November 3, 1975.

Gopalganj is a district in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. The district has 1,172,415 inhabitants and its surface area is 1,490 km2. The main town of the district is also called Gopalganj. It is the bank of the Madhumati river and located at 23°00’47.67" N 89°49’21.41". It is bounded by Faridpur district on the North, Pirojpur and Bagerhat district on the south, and Barisal district on the east and Narail district on the West. This district is also known as "GP" to the youth. Gopalganj is subdivided into five sub-districts (upazila/thana).

Kamal Hossain, better known as Dr. Kamal, is a founding leader, lawyer and politician of Bangladesh. He previously served as the press minister at the High Commission of Bangladesh, London and has worked for numerous universities such as the University of Dhaka, Independent University, Bangladesh, and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh as well as being a Fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has written a biography on the Founder of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman entitled From Rebel to Founding Father: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to much critical acclaim. Badrul Ahsan regularly contributes to Dhaka Courier, First News, Dhaka Tribune, Bangla Tribune, The Daily StarOur Time, Indian Express, Asian Affairs and South Asia Monitor.

Ahsan H. Mansur is a Bangladeshi economist and the 13th governor of Bangladesh Bank. He was the director of Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh. He was also the chairman of BRAC Bank and an independent director of Walton.

The Center for Governance Studies is a non-profit, nonpartisan think tank and research institute founded in 2004. It studies politics and governance in Bangladesh. Manjur Ahmed Chowdhury is chairman of the Center for Governance Studies. Zillur Rahman is the executive director.
