It is the largest tributary of the Fly River with a total length of 824 km (512 mi) including the Lagaip River the main river source of the Strickland River. Kandep District is one of the five Districts of Enga Province in Papua New Guinea. It is located in the southern part of Wabag, capital town of Enga. Kandep shares land borders between Laiagam-Porgera district, Wabag, and Wapenamanda District. It also shares borders with Southern Highlands, Western Highlands and the newly breakaway Hela Province. Kandep is accessible by road, and the Kandep - Laiagam Road links to Wabag which is 3 hours drive back and forth. The Kandep - Mendi road, a newly sealed road can be used to travel to Mt. Hagen via Mendi. The Kandep - Magarima Road is also connected.

The Kaijende Highlands are a nearly uninhabited expanse of mountains near Porgera in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. The highlands have been characterized as "some of Papua New Guinea's most pristine and scenic montane habitat". The Kaijende Highlands include Lake Tawa, Paiela Road, Omyaka Creek, Waile Creek and the Porgera Reservoir. The mountain range is 70 km north-west of Mount Hagen. According to a survey conducted in 2007, "areas like Kaijende are characterized by pronounced dominance of microtherm families, most notably by Cunoniaceae, Epacridaceae, Ericaceae, Geraniaceae, Myrsinaceae, Podocarpaceae, Ranunculaceae, Rosaceae, Theaceae, Violaceae, and Winteraceae."
The Porgera Landowners Association (PLOA) was formed in the late 1980s and incorporated in 1992. Its objectives are to represent the 10,000 landowners with traditional land around the Porgera Gold Mine and serve as a pressure group on behalf of the landowners, and to pursue landowner claims in the courts in Port Moresby. The PLOA is funded by royalties from the mine, so that the mine pays for the institution established to oppose it.

The Papua New Guinea earthquake was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that occurred in the Hela Province of Papua New Guinea on 26 February 2018, at 3:44 a.m. local time. The earthquake's epicenter was 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) west of the town of Komo. The maximum felt intensity was IX (Violent) on the Mercalli intensity scale. A total of 160 people were killed and many others were injured. An aftershock of M6.0 killed 11 people on 4 March, while another aftershock of M6.7 occurred at 00:13 local time on 7 March, killing at least 25 more. A 6.3 aftershock killed another 4 people on 7 April, more than a month after the first tremors hit the area.
Mt. Sisa is a heavily eroded pleistocene stratovolcano in Hela, Papua New Guinea. The taller of the mountain's two main peaks is estimated to be 2,650 metres (8,690 ft) high. The northern peak has a communications mast. The epicentre of the 2018 Papua New Guinea earthquake was on the mountain's northern foothills.
