The Port Denison Times was a weekly newspaper published in Bowen, Queensland, Australia. It was also known as the Port Denison Times and Kennedy District Advertiser and the Port Denison Times and Bowen Advocate.

History

The newspaper was first published in Bowen on 5 March 1864 until 25 August 1900 as the Port Denison Times and Kennedy District Advertiser. Port Denison was the port off the coast of Bowen. [1] After amalgamation with the Bowen Advocate ,1 September 1900 onwards, it was published as the Port Denison Times and Bowen Advocate. [2] It ceased publication in 1910. [3] [4]

Frederick Thomas Rayner (c. 1835–1900) was the founder and first editor of the "Times", the first newspaper published in tropical Queensland, and for a time Australia's most northerly publication. [5] It was at the Port Denison Times that James Smith Reid got his start in the newspaper business. Alexander Vindex Vennard who later wrote under the name of 'Bill Bowyang' undertook his apprenticeship with the paper before its demise.

His role as an officer in the Native Police was central in a number of important moments in colonial Queensland history including that of the brutal crushing of localised Aboriginal resistance after the Hornet Bank massacre, the foundation of Rockhampton and the creation of the Bowen settlement. He also had major contributions in the founding of Cardwell, the coastal and South Seas trade, and the British colonisation of the Torres Strait.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">John Marlow</span>

John By Durnford Marlow was an officer in the paramilitary Native Police force in the British colony of Queensland. He served in this corps for fourteen years and was stationed at frontier sites such as the Maranoa Region, Port Denison and on the Burdekin River. Marlow, by leading armed escorts of troopers, was also intrinsically involved in the expeditions which led to the establishment of the towns of Cardwell and Townsville.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Alexander Vindex Vennard</span> Australian writer

Alexander Vindex Vennard, or 'Bowie', was an Australian writer known by several pen names, principally Bill Bowyang. The name bowyang referred to a piece of cord strapped below the knee of a wearer's trousers. He wrote of swagmen, bushmen, horsemen, and the digger. Vennard also collected and preserved bush ballads.
