Port Trust Board (India)

In civilian and maritime law in India, a Port Trust Board is the statutory authority responsible for managing shipping and trade through a commercial seaport. India's first Port Trust Board was established for Calcutta Port in 1870, following passage of the Bombay Port Trust Act in 1879. Similar Boards were set up in Madras in 1905. The administration of Port Trust Boards were brought under national government in 1963 with legislation to enable the declaration of "major ports" with ownership of adjacent public land on the foreshore and seabed [1] All ports previously established under different Acts were brought within the purview of this newly enacted law.

Board membership

Besides representatives of the Central Government, the 1963 Act provides for trustees representing (1) labour employed in the port – a minimum of two representatives; (2) ship owners; (3) owners of sailing vessels; (4) shippers; and (5) such other interests, which in the opinion of the Central Government, ought to be locally represented.

In practical terms, autonomy for the board of trustees is nominal. Central Government has overriding powers. Until the early 1990s, trade union leaders representing labour employed in the port were routinely nominated to the board of trustees. However the advent of containerisation significantly reduced the stevedore workforces at major seaports. As a result, labour representation on the various Port Trusts has more recently been filled by civil servants drawn from among the permanent government employees carrying out services and administration functions.

G K Vasan is currently the president of Tamil Maanila Congress (M), a political party in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. He was a member of Rajya Sabha, an upper house of Indian Parliament from the year 2002 until 2014. During his tenure as a Member of Indian Parliament, he had functioned in several positions in the Union Government under UPA 1 & UPA II regime including as a Minister of State for Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation from Jan 2006 – May 2009; Union Minister of Shipping from May 2009 – May 2014 and as an In-charge Minister for Labour from Jan 2014 - April 2014.

Cochin Port A major port in India

Cochin Port or Kochi Port is a major port on the Arabian Sea – Laccadive Sea – Indian Ocean sea-route in the city of Kochi and is one of the largest ports in India. It is also the first transshipment port in India. The port lies on two islands in the Lake of Kochi: Willingdon Island and Vallarpadam, towards the Fort Kochi river mouth opening onto the Laccadive Sea. The International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT), part of the Cochin Port, is the largest container transshipment facility in India.

Indian Institute of Ports Management, IIPM, is a civil service training institution set up as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 by the Major Ports of India, a government of India body. On 14 November 2008, under a government covenant that came into action on the passing of The Indian Maritime University Act, IIPM was formally merged with seven other Indian maritime academic institutions — T S Chanakya, Mumbai;National Maritime Academy, Chennai; Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai; Marine Engineering Research Institute, Mumbai; Marine Engineering Research Institute, Kolkata; Indian Institute of Port Management, Kolkata and National Ship Design & Research Centre, Visakhapatnam — to form India's single largest ports and shipping institution, namely, the Indian Maritime University (IMU). Currently, IIPM continues to operate as a division of the IMU, which—while allowing IIPM to retain its original name—refers to IIPM as IMU's Kolkata campus.

Dredging Corporation of India Dredging Company

Dredging Corporation of India Limited, or DCI, is unit engaged in the business of dredging. DCI does dredging for Indian seaports exclusively. It occasionally dredges at foreign seaports in countries such as Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Dubai. It is mainly involved in maintenance dredging. Almost all the maintenance dredging in Indian seaports is carried out by DCI due to government regulations. DCI is also involved in capital dredging, beach nourishment, and land reclamation. The main seaports in which DCI does business are Visakhapatnam Port, Haldia, Kandla, Cochin Port and Ennore Port.

Transport in Visakhapatnam is the network of roads, railways, rapid transit system in the largest city of Andhra Pradesh. The city of Visakhapatnam also serves as the central hub of transport and logistics on the East coast of India and hence it is called as City Of Destiny.

Water transport in India has played a significant role in the country's economy and is indispensable to foreign trade. India is endowed with an extensive network of waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters, creeks and a long coastline accessible through the seas and oceans. It has the largest carrying capacity of any form of transport and is most suitable for carrying bulky goods over long distances. It is one of the most cheap modes of transport in India, as it takes advantage of natural track and does not require huge capital investment in construction and maintenance except in the case of canals. Its fuel efficiency contributes to lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact due to carbon. India has 14500 km of inland waterways. Out of which only 5685 km are navigable by mechanized vessels.

Gopalpur port is a deep sea port of Gopalpur in Ganjam District, Odisha, India. The port has been developed on the banks of the Bay of Bengal. The seaport will increase the sea trade of Odisha, as well as industry and employment.
