The Portland Park Open [1] was an open men's and women's grass court tennis event founded as the Portland Park LTCC Tournament in 1882. [2] The first edition was held at the Portland Park Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England and the tournament ran until 1921.

History

The Portland Park LTCC Tournament tennis event was first staged around July 1882 at the Portland Park Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. [2] By the early 1900s the tournament was branded under the name of the Portland Park Open. [3] The tournament was staged until at least 1921 when it was discontinued. [4]

The 1881 men's tennis season was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 73 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The 1882 men's tennis season was composed of the seventh annual tennis season and now incorporated 72 events. The Wimbledon Championships and Irish Championships was won by William Renshaw, the U.S. National Championships was won by Richard Sears collecting his second title other big winners were Richard Taswell Richardson picking up the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships and Ernest Renshaw winning the Princes Club Championships, The title leader this season was Robert W. Braddell winning 4 tournaments from 6 finals.

The Northumberland Championships or Northumberland Lawn Tennis Championships or Northumberland County Championships and later known as the ESAB Northumberland Open for sponsorship reasons was a men's and women's open grass court tennis tournament held first held at the South Northumberland Cricket Ground and various other venues until 1923. It was then staged at the Brandling Lawn Tennis Club (1924–1974), the Northumberland Club (1974–1983), Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, Great Britain. The tournament ran from 1882 to 1983.

The East Grinstead Open was a combined grass court tennis tournament held at the East Grinstead Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club(f.1882), East Grinstead, West Sussex, England from 1882 to 1939.

Minden Fenwick was an English then later New Zealand tennis player active during the late 19th century and early 20th century. His best results in major tournaments came at the 1881 Wimbledon Championships where he reached the third round in the men' singles. Between 1881 and 1904 he contested 13 career singles finals, and won 5 titles.

In 1887 the tournament was revived at Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club until 1894 only. In 1908 it was revived for the second time at the Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Carrickmines, Republic of Ireland where it is still played today.

It was played at the Market Harborough Lawn Tennis Club, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England. The tournament was staged annually until at least 1909.

The Brockenhurst Open was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1914. The event also known as the New Forest Open was organised by the New Forest Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and played at the Brockenhurst Park Estate and House until 1939 when it was discontinued due to World War II.
