Prashant Jha is an Indian-born physician, engineer, entrepreneur, editor, inventor, professor and author. [1] [2]

Biosketch

Jha was born in Delhi, in 1981. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) and studied Family Medicine for his post-graduation. He later pursued a doctoral fellowship in Intensive Care Medicine. After working for a decade as a general practitioner and Intensivist, he studied Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science at IIT Kanpur. He received his post-doctoral training in medical device innovations from the Stanford University. He then attended an executive program in Medical Device Design at Harvard University. Currently, he is a consulting Professor and Fellowship Director at the School of International Biodesign, a Department of Biotechnology funded program at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT Delhi). School of International Biodesign

Jha co-founded the School of International Biodesign at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and served as its Fellowship Director till December 2018. [3] The school is modelled on Stanford University's Biodesign program and trains innovators of medical technology through post-graduate innovation fellowships and also through workshops and events. [4] [5] The school is housed in Old OT Block of AIIMS, New Delhi and has Stanford University, Hiroshima University, Queensland University, and Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi as partners. It is funded by the Department of Biotechnology, a unit of Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. [5] [6] The program has yielded thirty two patents on low cost medical devices. Courses and workshops

Jha teaches courses focused around frugal medical technology development at AALTO University, in the EBN Innovation Network, University College London, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Hiroshima University, and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

He is a member of the faculty of Computer Science at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT Delhi) where he teaches a course on Digital Health (BIO5xx). [17]

Jha is a member of the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Patna and teaches a course titled "Innovations for Change" (HS451) in the autumn semester. This course leverages technologies to solve challenges for the underprivileged in the state of Bihar. [18]

Medical editor and author

Jha is the co-founder of world's first medical innovations journal, BMJ Innovations and serves as its Founder Editor. [19] [20] BMJ Innovations is a peer reviewed online journal that publishes basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies of all aspects of medical innovations. The journal champions research that offers new, cost-effective medical devices, technologies, processes and systems that improve patient care. It aims to promote innovations that make healthcare accessible and affordable, creating a community that aspires to make the world a healthier place. [21]

Jha is the senior editor in South Asia for the BMJ where he edits and curates BMJ South Asia awards, news, views and analysis. [22]

Between 1999 and 2011, Jha co-authored a series of handbooks for various medical specialties. They were popularly known as the SARP series. Some of the titles that became bestsellers were BAP (Biochemistry-Anatomy-Physiology), SARP (Skin, Anaesthesia, Radiology, and Psychiatry), Tumours, Surgery and PSM (Preventive and Social Medicine). [23] [24] In 2013, the entire content was acquired by CBS Publishers who have now revived the series with new set of editors. [25]

Social commitment

Jha works for a number of charities, the most prominent of them being Ramakrishna Mission and Vivekananda Samiti. [26]

The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council, which oversees their administration. The Minister of Education is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. As of 2021, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 16,234.

The Ministry of Education is a ministry of the Government of India, responsible for the implementation of the National Policy on Education. All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna, previously Jaya Prakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (JPNAIIMS), is a medical college and medical research public institute located in Phulwari Sharif, Patna, Bihar, India. It is one of the Institutes of National Importance in India. It started operating on 25 September 2012 after a series of observations by Patna High Court. The institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its foundation was laid by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, on 3 January 2004, during his tenure as vice-president. As of 2018, it became fully functional.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh is a medical college and hospital based in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India. The institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Minister for Health and Family Welfare, serves as the president. It is one of the Institutes of National Importance in India.

Dr.Vashishtha Narayan Singh was an Indian academic. He was a child prodigy and completed his PhD in 1969. He taught mathematics at various institutes in the 1960s and 1970s. Singh was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the early 1970s and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. He went missing during a train journey and was found years later. He was again admitted to the hospital and later returned to academia in 2014. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, posthumously in 2020.

Balram Bhargava is an Indian science administrator. He has been appointed for a three-year tenure as the Director-General at the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi and Secretary, Department of Health Research a division under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Narayana Panicker Kochupillai, popularly known as N. P. Kochupillai, is an Indian clinical endocrinologist, Professor Emeritus of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a former head of the department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, known to have contributed to the understanding of endemically prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorders. A winner of 2002 Dr. B. C. Roy Award, he was honoured by the Government of India in 2003 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

Nikhil Tandon is an Indian endocrinologist, medical academic and the head of the department of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 2005 and was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.

National Institutional Ranking Framework Methodology adopted to rank institutions of higher education in India.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The Framework was approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 September 2015. Depending on their areas of operation, institutions have been ranked under 11 different categories – overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental and research. The Framework uses several parameters for ranking purposes like resources, research, and stakeholder perception. These parameters have been grouped into five clusters and these clusters were assigned certain weightages. The weightages depend on the type of institution. About 3500 institutions voluntarily participated in the first round of rankings.

BETiC

BETIC based at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is an inter-disciplinary multi-institution initiative for medical device innovation. Established in 2014 with support from the government of Maharashtra, it comprises a network of 14 engineering and medical institutes across the state. The BETIC team have developed 50 medical devices as of 2019, and licensed 20 of them to startup companies or industry for mass production.

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous government public medical universities of higher education under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956. Since then, 24 more institutes were announced. As of January 2022, nineteen institutes are operating and five more are expected to become operational until 2025. Proposals were made for six more AIIMS.
