Pratiksha Baxi

Pratiksha Baxi (born 1970) is an Indian sociologist and feminist legal scholar, whose research has focused on courtroom procedures, ethnography and sexual violence against women. [1] She is currently a member of the faculty in Jawaharlal Nehru University's Center for the Study of Law and Governance. [1]

Education and career

Baxi has a doctoral degree in sociology from the Delhi School of Economics, and founded the Law and Social Sciences Research Network at Delhi University, which hosts an annual interdisciplinary conference on law and social science research. [2] Baxi has been awarded fellowships by the Kate Hamburger Center in Bonn, the University of Warwick, and the University Grants Commission in India. [1] [2]

In 2014, Baxi published Public Secrets of the Law: Rape Trials in India (Oxford University Press), which is one of the first works to present ethnographic research on courtrooms in India, focusing particularly on rape trials from a trial court in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. [3] The book received positive reviews in research publications, with the Law & Society Review describing it as a "remarkable study of the public life of rape trials in India" [4] and a review in The Journal of the Indian Law Institute calling it a "pioneering effort in the field of feminist legal research". [5] Baxi has also published on law and sexual violence in the Indian Express , Economic and Political Weekly, and Outlook India , [6] in addition to academic journals including Contributions to Indian Sociology , Third World Quarterly , and the Annual Review of Anthropology . Awards

In 2021, Baxi won the Infosys Prize for Social Sciences, for "her work on sexual violence and jurisprudence." [8] [9]

He has been the vice-chancellor of University of Delhi (1990–1994), prior to which he held the position of professor of law at the same university for 23 years (1973–1996). He has also served as the vice-chancellor of the University of South Gujarat, Surat, India (1982–1985).

Kalpana Kannabiran is an Indian sociologist, lawyer, human rights columnist, writer and editor based in Hyderabad, India. In March 2021, after a decade-long tenure, she retired from the post of Professor and Regional Director of the Council for Social Development, Southern Regional Centre, a research institute recognised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research. She is amongst the founding faculty of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, and is a co-founder of the women's rights group, Asmita Resource Centre for Women, established in 1991 in Hyderabad. She was nominated as the Civil Society Advisory Governor for Asia by the Commonwealth Foundation, London in January 2020 for a term of three years. Ayesha Kidwai is an Indian theoretical linguist. She is a professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, and an awardee of the Infosys Prize for Humanities in 2013.

Amita Singh is an Indian political scientist, currently serving as a professor of law and governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University, in Delhi, India. She is also a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. She is the recipient of numerous awards, and has published widely on public administration in India. Singh has been criticized for controversial statements made regarding Dalits, Muslims, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Vasudha Vasanti Dhagamwar (1940–2014) was a lawyer, scholar, researcher, writer and an activist. She was the Founder Director of Multiple Action Research Group (MARG), and was one of the four signatories of the Mathura Open Letter to the Supreme Court of India in 1979 in regard to the Mathura rape case, which helped spark a national movement against sexual violence in India.
