Preet Didbal is the former mayor of Yuba City, California. She was elected in 2017 and was the first Sikh female mayor in the United States. Her period of office was 2017-2018. [1] [2]

Early life

Preet graduated from Yuba City High School and California State University in Sacramento. She received a master's degree in public administration (MPA) from the University of San Francisco. [1]

American Sikhs number around 200,000 people and account for 0.1% of the United States population as of 2021, forming the country's sixth-largest religious group. The U.S. Census does not ask about religion and it is hard for surveys to estimate the populations of smaller religious groups like Sikhs. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the adult Sikh American population at 78,000 in 2008, while the Pew Research Center estimated the Sikh American adult population to be 140,000 and the total population at 200,000 in 2012. Sikh organizations like the Sikh Coalition and American Sikh Congressional Caucus estimate the Sikh American population to be as high as 500,000-1,000,000, but do not provide any sources for these figures; 500,000 nevertheless remains the most cited Sikh American population size in news media of 2019. Karen Humphrey is a former local news reporter, who later served as mayor of Fresno, California between 1989 and 1993. She was the first female mayor of Fresno, and as of 2019, the last Democratic mayor the city has had. She lost re-election to businessman Jim Patterson, not only losing in the primary, but only receiving 18% of the vote, and finishing third overall.

Kashmir (Kash) Gill is the former mayor of Yuba City, California. Gill served two terms as mayor, from 2009 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2014. Gill also served on the City Council of Yuba City. Gill was the first Sikh to be elected mayor in the United States.
