Shareware is a type of proprietary software that is initially shared by the owner for trial use at little or no cost. Often the software has limited functionality or incomplete documentation until the user sends payment to the software developer. Shareware is often offered as a download from a website. Shareware differs from freeware, which is fully-featured software distributed at no cost to the user but without source code being made available; and free and open-source software, in which the source code is freely available for anyone to inspect and alter.

Pull printing is a printing feature where a user's print job is held on a server or on a user's workstation and released by the user at any printing device which supports this feature. A number of software products exist that support pull printing. The user needs to first authenticate themselves at the printer, either using embedded software, or an external device. Once they have been authenticated, the user may select from the list of print jobs from the server, web portal or directly from the client PC which ones they wish to release at the current device. Some systems also allow delegation where the user may access print jobs submitted by other users or systems.

Google Cloud Print was a Google service that allowed users to print from any Cloud Print-aware application on any device in the network cloud to any printer with native support for connecting to cloud print services – without Google having to create and maintain printing subsystems for all the hardware combinations of client devices and printers, and without the users having to install device drivers to the client, but with documents being fully transmitted to Google. Starting on July 23, 2013 it allowed printing from any Windows application, if Google Cloud Printer was installed on the machine.
