Psychical inertia is a term introduced by Carl Jung to describe the psyche's resistance to development and change. He considered it one of the main reason for the neurotic opposing, or shrinking from, his or her age-appropriate tasks in life. [1]
Freud argued that such psychic inertia played a part in the lives of the normal, as well as of the neurotic, [2] and saw its origins in fixation between early instincts and their first impressions of significant objects. [3] As late as Civilization and its Discontents , he considered as a major obstacle to cultural development "the inertia of the libido, its disinclination to give up an old position for a new one". [4]
Later Jungians have seen psychic inertia as a force of nature reflecting both internal and outer determinants; [5] while others have seen it as a product of social pressures, especially in relation to ageing. [6]

Perversion is a form of human behavior which deviates from what is considered to be orthodox or normal. Although the term perversion can refer to a variety of forms of deviation, it is most often used to describe sexual behaviors that are considered particularly abnormal, repulsive or obsessive. Perversion differs from deviant behavior, in that the latter covers areas of behavior for which perversion would be too strong a term. It is often considered derogatory, and, in psychological literature, the term paraphilia has been used as a replacement, though this term is controversial, and deviation is sometimes used in its place.

The family romance is a psychological complex identified by Sigmund Freud in an essay he wrote in 1909 entitled "The Family Romances." In it he describes various phases a child experiences as he or she must confront the fact that the parents are not wholly emotionally available. The child has asexual feelings of jealousy within the family, and as a defense the young child or adolescent fantasizes that they are really the children of parents of higher social standing than their actual parents. The fantasy avenges the child's hurt by positing a better family. Later, the child's jealousies will become more overtly sexual as he or she passes through various stages of Oedipal development. More broadly, the term can be used to cover the whole range of instinctual ties between siblings, and parents and children.
