Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM) is a Malawian government agency and research institute, as well as Malawi's national public health institute. [1] [2] [3] [4] It is subordinate to the Ministry of Health. PHIM builds the capacity of the country to effectively attend and deal with public health challenges including emerging communicable and non-communicable diseases. [5] [6] [7]

The institute's main activities are health surveillance, research and prevention of diseases. The institute consists of research divisions for environmental health, infection control and health data, as well as mental and physical health. [8] [9] [10] [11]

Background

Formation

The institution was established in the early 2013 with support from the Ministry of Health for research, prevention and controlling of diseases on national level as well as obtaining evidence that implements policy and practice in public health service delivery. [12] The institution has also worked in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) and have had a close partnership for several years. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has also contributed to establishment of PHIM in 2013. Both institutes have similar interests in surveillance of infectious diseases in their respective countries. Part of the area that PHIM requested was IDSR, the institute's responsibility. In 2023, PHIM, along with The Ministry of Health launched the agenda for National Health Research ll and Research Methodology responsible for provision of a framework for conducting health sector research. [13] The agenda also ensures to tackle challenges which health officials face when conducting research. [14] [15]

Field Epidemiology is the application of epidemiologic methods to unexpected health problems when a rapid on-site investigation is necessary for timely intervention. A more expansive definition is: The practice of Epidemiology in the field. Work is done in communities often as a public health service and as part of government or a closely allied institution. Field epidemiology is how epidemics and outbreaks are investigated, and is used to implement measures to protect and improve the health of the public. Field epidemiologists must deal with unexpected, sometimes urgent problems that demand immediate solution. Its methods are designed to answer specific epidemiologic questions in order to plan, implement, and/or evaluate public health interventions. These studies consider the needs of those who will use the results. The task of a field epidemiologist is not complete until the results of a study have been clearly communicated in a timely manner to those who need to know, and an intervention made to improve the health of the people.

The International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) is an international umbrella organization of national public health institutes (NPHIs), public health government agencies working to improve national disease prevention and response. IANPHI is made up of 100+ members, located in more than 90 countries. An important goal of IANPHI is to improve health outcomes by strengthening NPHIs or supporting countries in creating new NPHIs.

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) was established in 2002 for the primary purpose of HIV vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda. It is one of the 5 international research sites established by the Department of Defense (DoD) United States HIV Research Program (MHRP), a program centered at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. MUWRP's main facility is centrally located in Kampala, near the Makerere University College of Health Sciences where the MUWRP laboratory is located. The main facility includes the clinic, administrative, and data offices.

From 2013 to 2016, the modalities and statue of Africa CDC were developed and the specialized agency was officially launched in January 2017.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Global Health Security Agenda</span>

The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) is an international effort operating in the field of infection prevention and control. A brainchild of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it was launched in February 2014 by a group of 44 countries and organizations including WHO. It was launched in 2014 as a five-year multilateral effort with the purpose to accelerate the implementation of the International Health Regulations (2005), particularly in developing countries. In 2017, GHSA was expanded to include non-state actors. It was also extended through 2024 with the release of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) 2024 Framework. The latter has the purpose to reach a standardized level of capacity to combat infectious diseases.

Ahmed E. Ogwell Ouma is a Kenyan public health specialist and an expert in health policy, health security, global health diplomacy and non-communicable diseases. He is currently the acting Director of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
