The Puerto Rico Academy of Arts and Sciences is a decades-old non-profit institution created for the advancement of knowledge in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The Argentine Academy of Cinematography Arts and Sciences is an industry association in Argentina founded in 2004. Each year the Academy present the Premios Sur for categories such as best fiction film, best director, best actor and best photography. The Academy also selects Argentine films to represent the company in the annual awards of other countries, such as the Oscars, where appropriate.

The Ariel Award for Best Director is an award presented by the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas (AMACC) in Mexico. It is given in honor of a film director who has exhibited outstanding directing while working in the Mexican film industry. In 1947, the 1st and 2nd Ariel Awards were held, with Roberto Gavaldón and Emilio "El Indio" Fernández winning for the films La Barraca and Enamorada, respectively.
