Pughazhendhi Thangaraj is an Indian film director and screenwriter who has worked on Tamil films. He often makes films set in the backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
Pughazhendhi began his career with Kaatrukkenna Veli (2001), before continuing to work on mid-sized films.
In 2011, he released Uchithanai Muharnthaal , which tells the story of a 13 year old rape victim during the Sri Lankan ethnic war of 2009. Starring Sathyaraj and Sangeetha in the lead roles, the film won critical acclaim and was also awarded the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for 3rd Best Film. [1]
In 2016, Pughazhendhi made a short film titled Avargal again on the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils. [2] The following year, he released a book titled Eelam 87 based on the same topic. [3]
He next made Kadal Kuthiraigal (2018), a tale based on the different issues faced by Tamils in the two sides of the Palk Strait. Prior to release, the film had to make 20 cuts to the original version during the censorship process. The film garnered negative reviews, with a critic from the Times of India stating "the making is quite sloppy and lacks even the basic cinematic quality needed to hold the attention of the viewers". Mani Ratnam presents the story of a child of Sri Lankan Tamil parentage adopted by Indian parents, whose desire is to meet her biological mother in the midst of the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was released on 14 February 2002.

No Fire Zone: In the Killing Fields of Sri Lanka is an investigative documentary about the final weeks of the Sri Lankan Civil War. The documentary covers the period from September 2008 until the end of the war in 2009 in which thousands of Tamil people were killed by shelling and extrajudicial executions by the Sri Lankan Army including Balachandran Prabhakaran, the 12-year-old son of the slain Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran. The Sri Lankan army has denied the allegations in the documentary. However, on 21 October 2015 the BBC reported that Maxwell Paranagama, a government-appointed Sri Lankan judge, says allegations the army committed war crimes during the long conflict with Tamil Tiger rebels are "credible". He went on to say there was evidence to suggest that footage obtained by the Channel 4 documentary No Fire Zone - showing prisoners naked, blindfolded, with arms tied and shot dead by soldiers - was genuine.

Ceylon, titled Inam in Tamil, is a 2013 Indian war film written, directed, filmed and produced by Santosh Sivan. The story revolves around a group of teenagers in an orphanage set during the civil war in Sri Lanka. The film premiered at the 2013 Busan International Film Festival and had a theatrical release in India on 28 March 2014. Although it was positively reviewed by critics, the film was withdrawn by Linguswamy(who bought the distribution rights for the film) from theaters, after it was met with protests from various Tamil groups in Tamil Nadu. The film was a "U" censored, and had a Govt Tax free tag.
