Punch is a New Zealand sports drama film written and directed by Welby Ings and starring Tim Roth. [1] It is Ings' feature directorial debut. [2]
Stan is a former professional boxer. His son Jim decided to follow in his father's footsteps and becomes a boxer himself. Jim discovers that he is homosexual and develops a relationship with fellow teenager Whetu, an aspiring singer. Their relationship is seen negatively by almost everyone in their town; in particular, the town's males.
Whetu is severely beaten and raped by Jim's boxing promoter and the promoter's friends. Visiting Whetu at the hospital, Stan accepts that Jim and Whetu have a relationship and he later tells Jim that all that matters is Jim's happiness. After Whetu is released from the hospital, he and Jim get revenge at the promoter by blowing up the promoter's car.
Stan receives the news that he has terminal cancer as Jim begins to train for a fight which will determine the regional champion in Jim's boxing's weight division. Stan decides to hide his illness from his son so that his son can concentrate on the physical and mental preparation for the contest. But Jim's promoter, in retaliation for Jim and Whetu's exploding his car, decides that Jim must lose the bout and bets money against his protege, telling Jim about Stan's cancer in order to distract Jim.
The day of the title fight arrives, and Jim, pummeling his rival, looks over at the boxing ring's side and sees his father sitting there, watching the contest. Just as Jim is about to win the championship, Stan collapses. Wanting to be next to his dad, Jim leaps out of the ring, causing Jim to lose the fight by disqualification and his promoter to win the bet.
Whetu is then shown singing, having achieved his dream of becoming a singer. Jim stays in town, quitting his boxing career and following his dream of becoming a videographer. The film ends with Jim being seen editing a video tributing his time and relationship with Whetu.
Production on the film commenced in Auckland, New Zealand in November 2020. [3] In July 2021, it was announced that production on the film wrapped. [4]

Nicknamed Ruby Robert and The Freckled Wonder, he took pride in his lack of scars and appeared in the ring wearing heavy woollen underwear to conceal the disparity between his trunk and leg-development.
Faumuina To'aletai Mafaufau David Tua, best known as David Tua, is a Samoan-New Zealand former professional boxer who competed from 1992 to 2013. A highly ranked heavyweight contender for most of his career, Tua was known for his formidable punching power, especially in his devastating left hook. He scored sixteen wins by knockout in the first round, which included knockouts of world heavyweight champions John Ruiz and Michael Moorer within thirty seconds of the first round, as well as late stoppages of world champions Oleg Maskaev and Hasim Rahman. He was ranked by BoxRec in the world's top 10 heavyweights from 1996 to 2003, reaching his highest ranking of No.3 in 1998. Tua ended his career with a knockout-to-win ratio of 82.6%. In a 2003 article by The Ring magazine, Tua was ranked 48th on a list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.

Fighting Tommy Riley is a 2004 independent American sports drama film. It tells the story of Tommy Riley and Marty Goldberg, a boxer and his trainer, as they work to secure a title shot for Tommy. Their plans are complicated by the unrequited feelings Marty develops for Tommy. When a big-time promoter seeks to acquire Tommy's contract, Tommy endangers his future career because of his loyalty to Marty. Marty, seeing only one way to free Tommy to take his shot, takes his own life.

With Duco founder David Higgins, Lonergan had success promoting world champion boxers Joseph Parker and Jeff Horn. With son Liam, he promoted Jai Opetaia, Lani Daniels and Mea Motu before being forced to release them all in February 2024 after running up losses of $2million dollars.
Joseph Dennis Parker, OM is a New Zealand professional boxer. He has held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) interim heavyweight title since March 2024. Previously, he held the WBO heavyweight title from 2016 to 2018. At regional level, he has held multiple heavyweight championships, including the WBO Oriental, Africa, and Oceania titles; as well as the PABA, OPBF, and New Zealand titles. As an amateur, he represented New Zealand at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the super-heavyweight division, and narrowly missed qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
David Light is a New Zealand professional boxer. As an amateur, he competed in the men's heavyweight division at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he won the silver medal against Canada's Samir El-Mais. Jerome Mandela Joseph-Pampellone is an English born, New Zealand raised professional boxer. He participated in the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships as an amateur and won three New Zealand national elite championships between 2018 and 2020. Pampellone narrowly missed qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics after failing to place at the Olympic Qualification Tournament for 2020 in Asia and Oceania.
