The Punjab Lawn Tennis Championships also known as the Punjab Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1885. [1] It was held at the Lahore Gymkhana Club, Lahore, Punjab in what was then India, before it became part of Pakistan, that was usually staged in December each year and ran until 1967.

History

The Punjab Lawn Tennis Championships was a grass court tennis tournament established in 1885 at the Lahore Gymkhana Club. Lahore Gymkhana Club, Lahore, Punjab in what was then India, [2] then later Pakistan and ran until 1967. The winner of the first men's singles title was England's Trevor D. D. Berrington. [3] In 1887 a ladies event was staged for the first time the singles title was won by a Miss Warburton. Between 1894 and 1896 no men's championships were staged. [3] and between 1891 and 1903 no ladies event was staged.

Until 1914 the tournament was mainly won by British players, [3] that year the first Indian born female finalist was Bibi Amrit Kaur. In 1915 native born Indian player Mohammed Sleem was the first non European male player to win this title, [4] and would go on to win this championship a record 13 times including 8 consecutive titles from (1915,17, 1919-26, 1928,29,31). [3] In the early 1950s, Amritsar, in East Punjab, India, became the host city for what would soon be the newly named Punjab State Championships. From the late 1950s until the late 1960s more international players won this event including Australias Fred Stolle in 1962. [3] In 1962 the last known winner of the Women's singles title was Australia's Madonna Schacht. In 1967 the tournament was abolished and the final men's champion was West Germany's Harald Elschenbroich. [3]

Mohammed Sleem was a tennis player and lawyer who represented India at the Davis Cup and Olympic Games. He competed in the singles event at the 1924 Summer Olympics, reaching the third round in which he lost to eventual Olympic champion Vincent Richards. With compatriot Sydney Jacob he competed in the men's doubles event and lost in the first round. Between 1915 and 1931 he won 27 career titles.

The Alliance LTC Championship was a late Victorian period men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1881. It was organised by the Alliance Lawn Tennis Club and held at Crouch End Hill, Crouch End, London, England. The championship was staged for three editions only until 1885.

The Northern India Championships or formally the Northern India Lawn Tennis Championship and, also known as the Northern India Tennis Championships, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded as the North India Championship c. 1899. The first tournament was played at Delhi, India. The championships ran until 1970 before it was discontinued.

The tournament was first established in 1885 as the County Wexford Tournament. The tournament was part of ILTF Circuit until 1967.

Man-Mohan Bhandari was an Indian tennis player. He competed at the Wimbledon Championships twice, in 1934 and 1936. He was active from 1930 to 1942 contesting 3 career singles finals and won 1 title.

The Asian Championships also known as the Asian International Championships or Asian Lawn Tennis Championships was an open international men's and women's grass and clay court tennis tournament founded in 1949 as the International Championships of Asia. The tournament was one of eight official championships of the International Lawn Tennis Federation. It was first played at the Calcutta South Club, Calcutta, India. The international tournament was played at other locations until September 1972 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.
