Qabaniso Malewezi, also known as Q, (born 1979) is a Malawian musician and poet. A former producer for the hip-hop band Real Elements, he has since authored several collections of poems including the audio collection People. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from Mzuzu University.

Biography

The son of Justin Malewezi, a former vice-president of Malawi, Malewezi grew up in Lilongwe. He developed a love for music at a young age, learned to play the guitar, and spent his teenage years performing and recording music. As an adult, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he studied performing arts at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, Surrey. [1]

While in the United Kingdom, [2] Malewezi became the producer for the group Real Elements, which performed hip-hop and became popular in Malawi and several other countries. They were active from the late 1990s to the first part of the 2000s. [3]

In 2004, Malewezi temporarily returned to Malawi to be with his father, who campaigned unsuccessfully for the presidency of Malawi that year. After a short return to the UK, Malewezi returned again to Malawi in 2005. [3]

Poetry

Malewezi's first poetry collection, The Road Taken, was published in 2011. [4] The book was edited by Pascal Kishindo, and included photos by the author, Justin Malewezi Jr., and graphic designer Fred Coelho. Poems from the book have been included in several writing courses. [5] In 2013, Malewezi published his second poetry collection, Little Discoveries, written in English, and in 2016 he published the audio poetry collection People. [6] [7] At its launch, Malewezi performed his poem [8] "Wikipedia". [9]

Malewezi has been featured on CNN's African Voices, BBC World, and The Travel Channel. [10] [11] [12]

In 2015, he received an honorary doctorate from Mzuzu University in recognition of his contribution to the arts. [5] [13]

He has performed at the annual Lake of Stars Music Festival. He also won the 2016 WatsUp TV Africa Music Video Awards Best Traditional Video award, with the Video Chipapapa featuring 2baba. He has also won numerous local awards like the Nyasa Music awards and the Urban Music People in categories such as best live act, best video and best Male artist. In 2018, he won the UMP Fashion awards for Most Fashionable Celebrity.

The Real Elements is a Malawian hip-hop band that gained notoriety in the 1990s and 2000s in Malawi. The group consisted of Marvel, Plan B, Stix, and Q. The group holds a special place in the Malawian music industry because it propagated Malawian hip-hop and paved the way for the Malawian hip-hop genre at a time when they were a few hip-hop artists in Malawi. Their music was considered the cutting edge in the Malawi music scene. Critics argue that is the best urban group that has come out of Malawi. They performed in Malawi and their music was also featured on Channel O beaming Malawian hip-hop for the first time to a Pan African audience. In their UK tours they opened for UK hip-hop artists like Blak Twang and Terri Walker. It was just as their international career was taking off that the group separated. Stix decided to leave the music industry and follow religious pursuits. The group currently is pursuing personal interests.
