The Quaife R4 GTS is a grand tourer-style race car designed and built by Quaife Engineering. Built to GT1 regulations, it contested select rounds of the British GT Championship in 1998, 1999, and 2001 as a technology demonstrator for the company's drivetrain products. The R4 GTS is significant for being one of three four-wheel drive GT1 race cars ever produced, the others being its immediate predecessor (a Ford Escort Cosworth) and the Bugatti EB110.
Beginning in 1996, Quaife Engineering entered the British GT Championship with a heavily modified Ford Escort Cosworth in the GT1 class. [1] Fitted with Quaife's proprietary drivetrain technology, the four-wheel drive Escort contested the championship as a promotional exercise and as an engineering testbed for Quaife's racing products. [2] From 1998 onwards, Quaife retired the Escort and announced a custom GT1 machine designed completely in-house. [3] In order to comply with GT1 homologation requirements, which mandated the production of at least one road legal chassis, Quaife built a single road car in addition to the race car.
Driven by company owner Mike Quaife at all rounds, the R4 GTS achieved a best result of 8th on two occasions but struggled to compete against factory machinery including the McLaren F1 GTR, the Porsche 911 GT1, and the Lister Storm GTL. [4] After attempting a majority of races in 1998 and 1999, the R4 GTS made three appearances in 2001 before being quietly retired. [5]
Sports car racing is a form of motorsport road racing which utilises sports cars that have two seats and enclosed wheels. They may be either purpose-built sports prototypes which are the highest level in sports car racing or grand tourers based on road-going models and therefore, in general, not as fast as sports prototypes. Sports car racing is one of the main types of circuit auto racing, alongside open-wheel racing, touring car racing and stock car racing. Sports car races are often, though not always, endurance races that are run over particularly long distances or large amounts of time, resulting in a larger emphasis on the reliability and efficiency of the car and its drivers as opposed to outright car performance or driver skills. The FIA World Endurance Championship is an example of one of the best known sports car racing series.

Bas Leinders is a retired professional racing driver from Belgium. He was a Formula One test and reserve driver in 2004 for the Minardi F1 team, taking part in the Friday practice sessions during Grand Prix weekends, making 17 appearances in all. He is also a former British Formula Ford and German Formula Three champion, winning the titles in 1995 and 1998 respectively.

The races featured grand touring cars and awarded a drivers and teams championship. The season began on 11 April 1999 and ended 26 November 1999 after ten races in Europe, the United States, and China.
The 1997 FIA GT Championship was the inaugural season of FIA GT Championship, an auto racing series endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and organized by the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO). The FIA GT Championship replaced the BPR Global GT Series which had been held races and championships from 1994 to 1996 after the series was promoted by the FIA, while Stéphane Ratel took over as promoter and organizer of the new championship, replaced the former BPR Organisation after the departure of partners Jürgen Barth and Patrick Peter. The races featured grand touring cars conforming to two categories of regulations, GT1 and GT2, and awarded driver and team championships in each category. The season began on 13 April 1997 and ended on 26 October 1997 after 11 rounds, visiting Europe, Japan, and the United States.
Jamie Oliver Campbell-Walter is a British professional racing driver. He was born in Oban, Scotland on 16 December 1972. He won the FIA GT Championship in 2000 and took a World Endurance Championship title in 2013 as an Aston Martin Racing factory driver. He now owns and runs Bullet Sports Management with business partner and former team-mate Nicolas Minassian and María Catarineu.

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992 until 1996. The powertrain was only fitted to this version of the Escort, a longitudinally mounted Cosworth YBT, a highly tunable turbocharged 2.0 L (1,993 cc) with a bore x stroke of 90.8 mm × 77 mm Inline-four engine which had an output of 227 PS in standard trim. Tuning companies have achieved power outputs in excess of 1,000 bhp.
The Ford GT70 was a limited production sports car designed by Ercole Spada, made by Ford UK in 1970 and intended for use in the World Rally Championship. Designed to compete with high speed rally cars such as the Porsche 911 and Renault Alpine, the GT70 featured a mid-mounted engine with rear-wheel-drive. Len Bailey, who had been the chief engineer on the Ford GT40 project, was enlisted to help design the bodywork and chassis. The GT70 had little success in rallying as it suffered numerous problems such as the frame not being stiff enough, the cockpit being cramped and the V6 in the original cars having too high a centre of gravity. Rule changes in the World Rally Championship as well as the fact that the already developed Escort platform was showing more promise caused Ford engineers to abandon the platform, and in 1973 the GT70 program ended.
The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is a high-performance version of the Ford Sierra that was built by Ford Europe from 1986 to 1992. It was the result of a Ford Motorsport project with the purpose of producing an outright winner for Group A racing in Europe.
The 2011 RAC Tourist Trophy was an auto racing event held at the Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, England on 3–5 June, and was the fifth round of the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship season. It was the FIA GT1 World Championship's second race held at the 5.901 km (3.667 mi) Silverstone, although it is the first international racing series to use the brand new pit complex which was being built at the time of last years race. The event was supported by the FIA GT3 European Championship, GT4 European Cup and Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.
The 2011 FIA GT1 Paul Ricard round is an auto racing event held at the Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet, France on 15–17 July, and was the seventh round of the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship season. It was the FIA GT1 World Championship's second race held at the 5.842 km (3.630 mi) Paul Ricard. The event was supported by the FIA GT3 European Championship, Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo and British Formula 3 Championship.
Robin Donovan is a British former racing driver. He is best known for competing in 14 editions of the Le Mans 24 hours race; his best result there being 6th overall, 3rd in class (LMP1) and 1st privateer home driving with 5 x Le Mans winner Derek Bell MBE and Daytona 24 hours winner Jurgen Lassig in 1994 with the Gulf Racing entered and sponsored Kremer Porsche K8.
Group GT1, also known simply as GT1, was a set of regulations maintained formerly by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), for Grand Tourer racing. The category was first created in 1993, as the top class of the BPR Global GT Series, and was included in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It fell under FIA regulation from 1997, after the BPR series came under the control of the FIA, becoming known as the FIA GT Championship. The category was dissolved at the end of 2011. The category may be split into four distinctive eras, from its debut in 1993–1996, 1997–1998, 2000–2009, 2010–2011.
The Harrier LR9C is a grand tourer-style race car designed and built by Harrier Cars. Built to GT1 and GT2 regulations, it is based on a stillborn road car prototype released in 1991. The LR9C competed in the British GT Championship from 1994 to 1998 and contested the 1994 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Marcos LM600 is a grand tourer-style race car designed and built by Marcos Engineering. Built to GT1 and GT2 regulations, it competed in the BPR Global GT Series, the FIA GT Championship, and the British GT Championship from 1995 to 2001. The LM600 also contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1995 to 1997.
