The Queensland Post Office Directory was a series of publications listing people and businesses in Queensland, Australia. [1]

Queensland is the second-largest and third-most populous state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated in the north-east of the country, it is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. To its north is the Torres Strait, with Papua New Guinea located less than 200 km across it from the mainland. The state is the world's sixth-largest sub-national entity, with an area of 1,852,642 square kilometres (715,309 sq mi).

History

These publications were produced from 1868 to 1949 on an annual basis to enable people in Queensland to be contacted. [1] They were produced initially by the Queensland Post Office but later they were outsourced to a commercial publisher. They were discontinued because people preferred to use telephone directories once telephones became widely used. Like telephone directories, the Queensland Post Office directories usually had two main sections, listings of names (like the White Pages) and listings of businesses organised by category allowing larger entries for advertising (like the Yellow Pages). Listing in these directories was not free or compulsory, [1] but the benefits of being able to be contacted meant most businesses and most heads of households (except the poorest) are listed.

An address book or a name and address book (NAB) is a book or a database used for storing entries called contacts. Each contact entry usually consists of a few standard fields. Most such systems store the details in alphabetical order of people's names, although in paper-based address books entries can easily end up out of order as the owner inserts details of more individuals or as people move. Many address books use small ring binders that allow adding, removing and shuffling of pages to make room.

The Pacific Bell Telephone Company is a telephone company that provides telephone service in California. The company is owned by AT&T Inc. through AT&T Teleholdings, and, though separate, is now marketed as “AT&T”. The company has been known by a number of names during which its service area has changed. The formal name of the company from the 1910s through the 1984 Bell System divestiture was The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. A business directory is a website or printed listing of information which lists businesses within niche based categories. Businesses can be categorized by niche, location, activity, or size. Business may be compiled either manually or through an automated online search software. Online yellow pages are a type of business directory, as is the traditional phone book. The details provided in a business directory may vary. They may include the business name, addresses, telephone numbers, location, contact information, type of service or products the business provides, the number of employees, the served region and any professional associations.

Kelly's Directory was a trade directory in England that listed all businesses and tradespeople in a particular city or town, as well as a general directory of postal addresses of local gentry, landowners, charities, and other facilities. In effect, it was a Victorian version of today's Yellow Pages. Many reference libraries still keep their copies of these directories, which are now an important source for historical research.

A reverse telephone directory is a collection of telephone numbers and associated customer details. However, unlike a standard telephone directory, where the user uses customer's details in order to retrieve the telephone number of that person or business, a reverse telephone directory allows users to search by a telephone service number in order to retrieve the customer details for that service.

Blue pages are a telephone directory listing of American and Canadian state agencies, government agencies, federal government and other official entities, along with specific offices, departments, or bureaus located wherein.

KC Colour Pages and KC White Pages are the classified and residential telephone directories provided specifically for the Kingston Communications service area. KC Colour Pages became the UK's first classified telephone directory when it was first published in 1954 to celebrate KC's 50th anniversary as Hull's telephone company. The Golden Pages, as the first KC Colour Pages was initially called, carried advertising from a wide range of customers including taxis, sail makers, driving schools, painters and decorators and office machinery suppliers amongst others.

The white pages is a listing of telephone subscribers in a telephone directory.

Tallebudgera Post Office is a heritage-listed former post office at 17 Trees Road, Tallebudgera, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 1 October 2007.

Old Gympie Post Office

The Old Gympie Post Office is a heritage-listed former post office at 22 Channon Street, Gympie, Gympie Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and built from 1878 to 1880 by Andrew Collins. It is also known as My Country. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
