R. Neelakantan (20 July 1936 – 10 May 2018), best known by his stage name Neelu, was an Indian stage, film and television actor known for his comedy and supporting role performances in Tamil cinema and theatre. He has acted in over 7,000 stage plays and 160 films. He died on 10 May 2018 in Chennai.

Tamil cinema India based Tamil language film industry

Tamil cinema refers to Tamil-language motion pictures, which are primarily made in India. Based in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the hub of the Tamil film industry is in the Kodambakkam neighbourhood of Chennai. Kollywood is a colloquial term for this industry, the word being a portmanteau of Kodambakkam and Hollywood.

Career

Neelu started acting in school dramas from school days, continuing through his college days at Vivekananda College. He along with Ambi (Cho Ramaswamys brother) and Narayanasamy started Viveka Fine Arts. [3] He acted in plays like Muhammad bin Tughluq, Endru Thaniyum Indha Sudandira Dhaagam, Quo Vadis, Unmayae Un Vilai Enna?, Yarukkum Vetkamillai. In 1966 he made his film début Aayiram Poi directed by Muktha Srinivasan. He has acted in plays along with Crazy Mohan, Cho Ramaswamy. He has also worked as production manager in Jerry. [3] All through his career, he worked with V D Swamy before retiring from his day job after 40 years of service.

<i>Muhammad bin Tughluq</i> (play) play

Muhammad bin Tughluq is a 1968 socio-political satire comedy play in Tamil written by Cho Ramaswamy. Cho also plays the titular character, Muhammad bin Tughluq, portraying the Sultan and the Indian political and social affairs in a sarcastic and humorous way. The play first premiered in 1968 and opened to instant success. Thereafter, with only a few changes in 1969, the play was enacted without any changes in respect with cast, dialogues, characters, costumes, settings etc. until present day. The play ran continually for a number of performances, whose success kindled a film of the same title in 1971.

The film is a satirical take on the then political and social affairs of India and is considered a fine portrayal of the political attitude existent till today.

Manam Oru Kurangu is a 1967 Indian Tamil-language satirical film directed by A. T. Krishnaswamy and produced by T. V. Arasu. Based on the play of the same name, itself inspired by the George Bernard Shaw play Pygmalion, the film stars Cho Ramaswamy, R. Muthuraman, T. S. Balaiah, A. V. M. Rajan, K. R. Vijaya and Vijayarani. It was released on 14 January 1967 and became a commercial success.
