R. Venkataramani (born 13 April 1950) is an Indian constitutional lawyer and a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India. He is currently serving as the 14th Attorney-General for India. [1] He was appointed as a Member,Law Commission of India in 2010. He has been appearing for the State of Tamil Nadu as a Special Senior Counsel for the past 12 years and also acting as Special Senior Counsel for the State of Andhra Pradesh.
Venkataramani was born in Pondicherry. He did his schooling at the Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School in Puducherry. He graduated in Physics from the Loyola College,Chennai. [2] He then studied Law at the Pondicherry Law College. [3] He became a registered lawyer with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu in 1977 and later moved to the Supreme Court in 1979. In 1997,he was appointed as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court. Throughout his career,he represented various clients,including the Central government,state governments,universities,and public sector entities,in both the Supreme Court and High Court. Additionally,Mr. Venkataramani was a member of the Law Commission of India in both 2010 and 2013. [4]
Venkataramani acted as the receiver in the Amrapali case and also represented parties in the recent Hijab row case in the Supreme Court of India. He has appeared as counsel for the Supreme Court in cases concerning the service conditions of Court employees. [5]
A barrister is a type of lawyer in common law jurisdictions. Barristers mostly specialise in courtroom advocacy and litigation. Their tasks include arguing cases in courts and tribunals,drafting legal pleadings,researching the law and giving legal opinions.
In most common law jurisdictions,the attorney general or attorney-general is the main legal advisor to the government. In some jurisdictions,attorneys general also have executive responsibility for law enforcement,prosecutions or even responsibility for legal affairs generally. In practice,the extent to which the attorney general personally provides legal advice to the government varies between jurisdictions,and even between individual office-holders within the same jurisdiction,often depending on the level and nature of the office-holder's prior legal experience.
An advocate is a professional in the field of law. Different countries and legal systems use the term with somewhat differing meanings. The broad equivalent in many English law–based jurisdictions could be a barrister or a solicitor. However,in Scottish,Manx,South African,Italian,French,Spanish,Portuguese,Scandinavian,Polish,Israeli,South Asian and South American jurisdictions,"advocate" indicates a lawyer of superior classification.
A King's Counsel is a senior lawyer appointed by the monarch of some Commonwealth realms as a "Counsel learned in the law". When the reigning monarch is a woman,the title is Queen's Counsel (QC).
The Attorney General for India is the chief legal advisor of the Government of India. The Attorney General is appointed by the President of India at the instance of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and hold office during the pleasure of the President. The Attorney General must meet the qualifications necessary for an appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Therefore,the Attorney General should have served as a judge in a high court for a minimum of five years,or as an advocate in a high court for at least ten years. Alternatively,the President may consider an individual as eligible for the role if they are deemed an eminent jurist.
A President's Counsel is an eminent lawyer who is appointed by the President of Sri Lanka as an individual "learned in the law". The term is an honorific that replaced the Queen's Counsel (QC),which Sri Lanka ceased appointing when it became a republic in 1972. It is equivalent to the appointment of a King's Counsel in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms,and that of Senior Counsel in Commonwealth republics,bearing the same privileges,such as sitting within the Bar of court.
Kottayan Katankot Venugopal is an Indian constitutional lawyer and a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India. He was enrolled as an advocate on 27 January 1954. On 1 July 2017,he was appointed as the Attorney General of India and retired on 30 September 2022. He is Patron of SAARCLAW and earlier has been its President. He is founder of M K Nambyar SAARCLAW Centre For Advanced Legal Studies at the NALSAR University of Law.

Sankararaman murder case was a case on the staged murder of Sankararaman,the manager of Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram,a town in state of Tamil Nadu. He was murdered in the premises of the temple on 3 September 2004. The blame was hoisted on the Shankaracharya Shri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal and Shri Vijayendra Saraswati Swamigal.

He has provided assistance to the Supreme Court as an Amicus curiae in numerous cases. In April 2022,the Supreme Court appointed him as Amicus curiae to assist in the finalization of the Constitution of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
