The RHB-The Straits Times Spelling Championship, informally known as the Big Spell, is a spelling bee held annually in Singapore, organized by The Straits Times and RHB Bank. It was first held in 2012. [1]

The first winner of an official spelling bee was Frank Neuhauser, who won the 1st National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in 1925 at age eleven.

It was established on 15 July 1845 as The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce, There are specific Myanmar and Brunei editions published, with a newsprint circulation of 5,000 and 2,500 respectively.

2013 Championship

The 2013 competition was held from March 9, 2013 to April 27, 2013 at the Raffles City Convention Centre. Footage of the championship was broadcast by The Straits Times 's RazorTV. Ashvin Sivakumar of Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), Singapore won the competition and received the $5,000 grand prize. An estimated 1,400 children participated.

Organisers and sponsors

As with the inaugural edition, the Big Spell 2013 was organised by The Straits Times and RHB Bank. The competition was supported by Singapore's Ministry of Education and the National Library Board. [2]

RHB Bank

RHB Bank Berhad was incorporated in Malaysia as a public limited company on 24 August 1994 under the name of DCB Holdings Berhad. It assumed its present name on 16 June 1997. RHB Capital was listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad on 29 December 1994, replacing DCB Bank Berhad (now known as RHB Bank Berhad, pursuant to a restructuring scheme undertaken in 1994.

Elimination rounds

The elimination rounds were broadcast by RazorTV. [3] Round one of the Big Spell was held on March 9, 2013. An estimated 1,400 children from 120 schools in Singapore were registered for the first round of the Big Spell. The contestants took a vocabulary test, in which their answers were to be written on answer scripts. [4] The duration of the test was an hour, and participants were given fifty words to complete. [2] Out of the 1,400 children, some eighty of them were short listed for the zonal round, where the final thirty would be selected through the results. [5]

Finals

The Grand Finals of the Big Spell commenced on April 27, 2013. [6] There were thirty finalists in total. In all, ten rounds were played that day. Ashvin Sivakumar of Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), the eventual winner, was described as a "standout at the microphone", with his looming height and inquisitiveness. [5] Footage of the Grand Finals were shown by RazorTV. [3]

Winner and runner-up

Ashvin Sivakumar spelt pulchritudinous correctly in the final round of the day, and promptly finished first. [7] As the victor, Sivakumar received $5,000 in cash and a school trophy. [7] The runners-up, Kua Le Yi and Loi So Xian, were awarded $3,000 and $1,000 respectively. [5]

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual spelling bee held in the United States. The bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held at a hotel or convention center in Washington, D.C. during the week following Memorial Day weekend. Since 2011, it has been held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center hotel in National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside Washington D.C. It was previously held at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington D.C. from 1996 to 2010.

86th Scripps National Spelling Bee

The 86th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held from May 28 to May 30, 2013 at the Gaylord National in Oxon Hill, Maryland and was broadcast live on ESPN3, ESPN2, and ESPN. For the first time, the competition included a vocabulary quiz in addition to the usual spelling challenge. Arvind Mahankali of Bayside, New York won the competition and received the $30,000 grand prize. Including local feeder tournaments, an estimated 11 million children participated.

The Big Spell is a British game show which began airing on 8 January 2017 at 5 pm on Sky 1. The program is an adaptation of the Australian program The Great Australian Spelling Bee and features 20 children aged between 9 and 13 competing in a series of spelling-related challenges, and delves into both the spellings and the meanings of various words. The show is hosted by Sue Perkins and Joe Lycett, with newsreader Moira Stuart the pronouncer. The children's names are Evie, Henry, Anna, Tiarna, Scarlett, Jade, Tam, Odhran, Jasmine, Dan, Jeswin, Ayushman, Caleb, Zara, Saik, Alex, Dexter, Nathan, Sanskriti and Kate. The show was cancelled after one series.

Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC) is a Methodist church in Singapore located at 48 Barker Road along Dunearn Road, and is colocated with Anglo-Chinese School and Anglo-Chinese School (Primary).

2018 Singapore Grand Prix

The 2018 Singapore Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held on 16 September 2018 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore. The race was the fifteenth round of the 2018 Formula One World Championship and marked the nineteenth running of the Singapore Grand Prix and the eleventh time the race was held at Marina Bay.
