Rachel Hartman (born July 9, 1972 in Kentucky) is an American writer and artist of comics, and an author of young adult fiction. She is known for her books Seraphina (2012), Shadow Scale (2015), Tess of the Road (2018), and In the Serpent's Wake (2022).

Early life

Rachel Hartman was born on July 9, 1972 [1] [2] in Kentucky. [1] [3] She lived in numerous places including Lexington, Kentucky, [4] Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, England, and Japan. [3] she attended Washington University in St. Louis, [1] where she obtained a BA in Comparative Literature. [3]

Career

In 1996, Hartman published her first comic book, Amy Unbounded, the Ashcan Series.

Her first book, Seraphina , received the 2013 William C. Morris Award, awarded to best young adult book published in the US by a debut author [5] and won the 2012 Cybils Award for best young adult fantasy or science fiction novel. [6] Shadow Scale appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List for Young Adult books in its first week of eligibility. [7] Her third novel, Tess of the Road , a companion novel featuring new characters as well as appearances of characters from her first two novels, was released on February 27, 2018. [8] , followed in 2022 by the fourth, In the Serpent's Wake . [9]

Personal life

Hartman lives in Vancouver, British Columbia with her husband and son. [3] [10]

Her hobbies include reading, playing role-playing games, dancing, and playing the cello. [1]

The book was published on July 10, 2012, by Random House Publishing and was ranked at number 8 The New York Times Best Seller list in its first week of publication. Seraphina was awarded the 2013 William C. Morris Award for the best young adult work by a debut author. Foreign language rights to the novel have been sold in twenty languages, including Spanish and Hebrew. A sequel entitled Shadow Scale came out in 2015,. A companion novel Tess of the Road set in the same milieu was published in 2018, followed by its own sequel, In the Serpent's Wake (2022).

Tess of the Road is a 2018 fantasy novel by Rachel Hartman. A companion novel to Hartman's previous books Seraphina and Shadow Scale, the novel follows the story of Tess Dombegh, a younger sister of Seraphina. While some characters from the previous novels make appearances in the book, Tess of the Road is not a direct sequel to those novels, but is the start of a new duology. It was published by Random House on February 27, 2018. Tess of the Road was nominated for the 2018 Andre Norton Award and the 2018 Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book. The sequel, In the Serpent's Wake, was published in 2022.

In the Serpent's Wake was listed as one of the best science fiction and fantasy novels of 2022 in the New York Times and appeared on the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2023 list of Best Fiction for Young Adults. It was a finalist for the 2023 Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book, awarded at the Hugo Awards.
