In a career spanning three decades, he went from being a story and dialogue writer for director Bharathiraja from 1980–82 to a successful director who thrived in experimenting with different genres, before becoming an actor. With over 400 films to his name, Manivannan was one of the most experienced actors in the field and directed exactly 50 films. Manivannan was mainly a supporting actor in films and often played the comedian, supporting character and villainous roles.

The story revolves around an ordinary man Ammavasai who builds his political career through shortcuts and unethical means, while his son grows up to be an honest law enforcer. The film was followed by the sequel Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA in 2013, also starring Sathyaraj. It went on to run more than 25 weeks and was declared a blockbuster. This film is touted as one of Sathyaraj's best performances and over years has developed a strong cult following.

Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA is a 2013 Tamil-language political satire film directed by Manivannan. A sequel to Amaidhi Padai (1994), it stars Sathyaraj in his 200th film, reprising his role as Nagaraja Cholan from the original, alongside an ensemble cast including Seeman, Manivannan, his son Raghuvannan, Mrudula Murali, Komal Sharma and Varsha Ashwathi. The film, featuring music composed by James Vasanthan, was produced by Ravichandran and K. Suresh under the banner of V House Production and shot in Coimbatore and surrounding areas in one single schedule. Unlike the original, Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA opened to mixed reviews. It was Manivannan's 50th and last film as a director and actor, as he died a month after the film's release.

Sound Party is a 2004 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Aarthi Kumar. The film stars Sathyaraj and Prathyusha with Vadivelu in a pivotal role. The film, produced by GR, had musical score by Deva and was released after several delays in August 2004 to negative reviews. The film was a remake of Malayalam film Kottaram Veettile Apputtan starring Jayaram.
