Raheleh Filsoofi is an Iranian multidisciplinary artist based out of Nashville, Tennessee. She is a professor of ceramics at Vanderbilt University. [1]
Filsoofi was a lead faculty member of the Chautauqua Visual Arts School from 2019 to 2022. [2]
Filsoofi's project Imagined Boundaries, consisting of two separate exhibitions, debuted synchronously in a solo exhibition at the Abad Art Gallery in Tehran and a group exhibition (Dual Frequency) at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Florida in 2017. Drawing on an expansive archive of Middle Eastern art and history, the exhibition featured an installation of white box vessels that connected audiences in the U.S. and Iran through digital interfaces on the nights of the show openings. Each box had a cutout of a traditional Iranian shape drawn from visuals that can be traced back to the Music Room of Ali Qapu Palace in Isfahan. Made to facilitate intercultural dialogue, Imagined Boundaries [3] [4] was inspired by the Safa Khaneh community in Isfahan in the early 1900s.
BITE, is a performance by Raheleh Filsoofi in which the artist imprints a clay plate with her teeth to create a decorative pattern. A commentary on colonial narrative, Filsoofi creates her own artifact as a way to value marginalized existences. The act is both labor and ritual as Filsoofi offers her body as a tool to embed identity in the soil of the earth. [5]
Filsoofi's series of rotating, jump roping self-portraits pays tribute to the artist's foundations in ceramics; with origins in the phenakistoscopes developed by Joseph Plateau in 1841, [6] as well as ceramic plates from 10th-century Islamic art, Filsoofi uses this traditional style of ceramics amidst a digital age.
Peter Voulkos was an American artist of Greek descent. He is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic sculptures, which crossed the traditional divide between ceramic crafts and fine art. He established the ceramics department at the Los Angeles County Art Institute and at UC Berkeley.

Annabeth Rosen is an American sculptor best known for abstract ceramic works, as well as drawings. She is considered part of a second generation of Bay Area ceramic artists after the California Clay Movement, who have challenged ceramic traditions involving expression, form and function and helped spur the medium's acceptance in mainstream contemporary sculpture. Rosen's sculptures range from monumental to tabletop-sized, and emerge out of an accumulative bricolage process combining dozens or hundreds of fabricated parts and clay fragments and discards. Reviewers characterize her art as deliberately raw, both muscular and unapologetic feminine, and highly abstract yet widely referential in its suggestions of humanoid, botanical, aquatic, artificial, even science-fictional qualities. Critic Kay Whitney wrote that her work is "visceral in its impact, violent even, but also sensual and evocative" and "floats between the poles of the comic and the mordant."

Cavener is best known for her fantastical animal figures, which embody the complexity of human emotion and behavior.
Sylvia Hyman was an American ceramic artist, art teacher and visual artist. She was known for her lifelike ceramic pieces and sculptures which are included in the collections of museums worldwide. Her trademark pieces, which were fashioned from stoneware or porcelain, often used the artist technique of trompe-l'œil to create the realism of art. Much of Hyman's work featured everyday objects, such as paper, books, or food, realistically crafted from ceramic. She was also the founder of the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA).

Paul Dresang is an American ceramic artist and professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Working mainly with glass, porcelain, and clay, Dresang’s “highly individual, sensuous, salt-fired porcelain forms are decorated with an obsessive amount of detail.” He defines his work primarily as “post-modern fertility pieces".” Dresang aims to create surreal images with ceramics by often focusing on everyday items in his work and by exploring “opposing ideas of constraint and breaking free.”. After receiving his MFA, Dresang has gone on to become a highly sought-after potter. He has presented his work in countless group exhibitions, and is featured in many permanent collections nationally. He is currently located in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Alicia Henry is a contemporary artist living, working and teaching in Nashville. Henry is an associate professor in the Language and Arts Department at Fisk University. Henry creates multi-media artwork that focuses on themes of the body and identity. She uses materials such as wood, fabric, paper and pigment for her creations. Henry has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Art at Yale University.

Donté K. Hayes is an American artist known for his ceramic sculpture. He studied at Kennesaw State University and the University of Iowa. In 2019 Hayes was named Ceramics Monthly magazine's emerging artist. The same year he won the Society 1858 prize for contemporary Southern art from the Gibbes Museum of Art. His work is in the collection of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His piece, Initiate, was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum as part of the Renwick Gallery's 50th Anniversary Campaign.
