Education

After completing college at Nalanda College Colombo, Rahula went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Moratuwa. He obtained his master's degree in energy technology from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. He also holds a PhD in energy engineering from Ecole des Mines de Paris, France. Attalage has received the University of Moratuwa's award for Outstanding Research Performances on five consecutive occasions. [3]

The Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education is a statutory body in Sri Lanka coming under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry and offering Higher National Diploma courses. Prof. Sammu Raghu De Silva Chandrakeerthy is an academic, researcher and practitioner of the discipline of engineering who has contributed to the development of Engineering Education and research in the field of Civil and Structural Engineering both in Sri Lanka and abroad. He is a former Vice-President of the Society of Structural Engineers, Sri Lanka (1992-1994). He has pioneered in teaching Structural Engineering Design, Building Construction, Construction Engineering, and Building Materials subjects at the University with emphasis to Sri Lankan environmental conditions and local construction practices.

Samarajeewa "Sam" Karunaratne, FIET, FIEE, FIESL is an emeritus professor of engineering and a leading Sri Lankan academic who is the founding chancellor and president of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and the former vice-chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. He has held a number of other appointments in the field of higher education in Sri Lanka, including senior professor of electrical engineering and dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, president of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. Karunaratne is a pioneer in the development of the use of computers in the field of engineering and played an important role in the development of information technology education and industry in Sri Lanka.

Harindra Joseph S. Fernando is the Wayne and Diana Murdy Family Endowed Professor of Engineering and Geosciences at University of Notre Dame. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences (primary) and Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering. He also holds a concurrent appointment with the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics.

The history of the internet in Sri Lanka began with the initial proposal of the 'Lankan Experimental Academic and Research Network' (LEARN) to Sri Lankan government in 1989 by Prof. Abhaya Induruwa. In 1990 the LEARNmail was initiated and the first message was sent over LEARN was from the University of Moratuwa to the University of Colombo. In 1994, wireless links were used to create first Internet Protocol / Wide area network (IP/WAN) in Sri Lanka between University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa and Open University of Sri Lanka. Saman Halgamuge was educated in Germany and Sri Lanka and he is currently a Professor of University of Melbourne, Australia. He is an elected Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA. He is a highly cited expert in his field and listed as one of the top 2% cited experts for AI and Image Processing in the Stanford University Database published in 2020. His most-cited paper being Self-organizing hierarchical particle swarm optimizer with time-varying acceleration coefficients, with over 3300 citations, according to GoogleScholar. He is a Distinguished Speaker/Lecturer on Computational Intelligence appointed by IEEE. He has supervised 45 PhD scholars to completion and delivered over 50 keynotes at International and national conferences.

Engineering is the most sought after subject areas among Sri Lankan students. The engineering degrees make up less than 2% of the bachelor's degrees in Sri Lanka.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Institute of Technology, University of Moratuwa</span>

Ruwan Chandra Gopura is a professor attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and a former Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. He is currently the Head, Department of Medical Technology, Faculty of Medicine and Director/Research at the same university. Gopura was the chairperson of IEEE Sri Lanka Section in 2020. He was the chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Sri Lanka Section Chapter from February 2017 to February 2020. He was the secretary of the same Chapter from 2013 to 2017. Gopura was the secretary of IEEE Sri Lanka Section in 2015. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. Ruwan Gopura is a founding member of Sri Lanka Robotic Meetups. He is an editorial board member of reputed international journals. He won the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, "Most Outstanding Volunteer Award 2022 " at the IEEE Sri Lanka section awards held on the 17th September, 2022.
