Rakesh Pandey (born 14 August 1952) is an Indian politician and a member of the 18th Uttar Pradesh Assembly from Jalalpur as a Samajwadi Party politician. [2] He was a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha from Ambedkar Nagar and a member of Committee on Rural Development as a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. From 2002 to 2007,he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. [3] In January 2022,Pandey left Bahujan Samaj Party and joined Samajwadi Party. [4]
Pandey was born in Kotwa Mohamadpur in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh to Jagmohan Pandey and Raghuraji Devi. He studied till matriculation. Pandey married Manju Pandey on 29 June 1971. They have two sons. [3] His younger son,Ritesh Pandey is an MP from the Ambedkar Nagar constituency. His older son,Ashish Pandey is a Lucknow based real estate businessman. [5] [6]
Pandey was a member in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2007. [3] As a Bahujan Samaj Party politician,he was a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha from Ambedkar Nagar from 2007 to 2014. [3]
In January 2022,Pandey left Bahujan Samaj Party and joined Samajwadi Party. [4] Subsequently,Pandey won from the Jalalpur constituency in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election,defeating Bahujan Samaj Party's Rajesh Singh by a margin of 13,630 votes. [2] [7]
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is a national level political party in India that was formed to represent Bahujans,referring to Scheduled Castes,Scheduled Tribes,and Other Backward Classes (OBC),along with religious minorities. According to Kanshi Ram,when he founded the party in 1984,the Bahujans comprised 85 percent of India's population,but were divided into 6,000 different castes. The BSP has its main base in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh where it was the second-largest party in the 2019 Indian general election with 19.3% of votes and third-largest in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election with 12.88% of votes. Its election symbol is an elephant which is the same symbol historically used by Dr. Ambedkar's Scheduled Castes Federation.
