The politics of Nepal functions within the framework of a parliamentary republic with a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the Prime Minister and their cabinet,while legislative power is vested in the Parliament.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal,alias Prachanda,is a Nepalese politician currently serving as the Prime Minister of Nepal. He previously held the prime ministerial post from 2008 to 2009 as the first prime minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal,and again from 2016 to 2017.
The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) (Nepali:नेपालकम्युनिस्टपार्टी(माओवादीकेन्द्र)),abbreviated CPN (Maoist Centre),CPN-Maoist Centre,CPN Maoist Centre,or CPN (MC),is the third largest political party in Nepal and a member party of Socialist Front. It was founded in 1994 after breaking away from the Communist Party of Nepal (Unity Centre). The party launched an armed struggle in 1996 against the Nepalese government. In 2006,the party formally joined mainstream politics after signing a peace agreement following the 2006 Nepalese revolution.
The Nepal Communist Party,abbreviated NCP is a defunct communist party which existed in Nepal from 2018 to 2021. It was founded on 17 May 2018,from the unification of two leftist parties,Communist Party of Nepal and Communist Party of Nepal. The unification was completed by the Party Unification Coordination Committee,after eight months of negotiation. The two predecessor parties subsequently dissolved,making way for the new united party. The party retained the electoral symbol of the CPN (UML),the sun.
Nabindra Raj Joshi was a Nepali politician and former minister for industry. Joshi joined politics as a student,becoming the general secretary of Nepal Students Union in 1986. After the re-establishment of democracy,he was elected deputy mayor of Kathmandu,serving from 1992 to 1997. After the 2006 revolution,he was twice elected to the constituent assembly,in 2008 and 2013. He was the minister of industry from 2016 to 2017 in the coalition government of Communist Party of Nepal and Nepali Congress under the leadership of Pushpa Kamal Dahal. In the 2017 general election,he lost to Jeevan Ram Shrestha of CPN UML whom he had defeated in the previous elections.
Lokman Singh Karki,is the former Chief Commissioner of Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) of Nepal. He assumed office in May,2013. He was sacked from the post on 21 October 2016. In a landmark verdict,the Supreme Court on 8 January 2017 held that Mr. Karki was not qualified for the appointment to the office of the chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority.
Greater Nepal is an irrendentist concept in Nepal,which claims current Indian and Bangladeshi territories beyond Nepal's present day boundaries. These claims typically include the areas controlled by Nepal between 1791 and 1816,a period that ended with the Anglo-Nepalese War and the signing of Sugali Treaty. In addition,extensive territories in present day Indian states of Uttar Pradesh,Bihar,West Bengal and some parts of Bangladesh are also included in the claims of the activist organisation Greater Nepal Nationalist Front,which demands the "return" of these territories to Nepal. A map similar to theirs was displayed by the mayor of Kathmandu in his office in June 2023,in reaction to an alleged "Akhand Bharat" map in the Indian Parliament building.
Bibeksheel Nepali Dal is a political party in Nepal. The name "Bibeksheel" translates to "common sense wisdom".
Yogesh Bhattarai is a Nepali politician and a former Minister of Culture,Tourism and Civil Aviation. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Taplejung constituency in the 2022 Nepalese general election.
General elections were held in Nepal in two phases on 26 November and 7 December 2017 to elect the 275 members of the fifth House of Representatives,the lower house of the Federal Parliament of Nepal.
On 4 August 2016,Pushpa Kamal Dahal of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist-Centre) was elected as the Prime Minister of Nepal. His candidacy was supported by the Nepali Congress,and several small parties represented in the Nepalese Parliament after a power-sharing deal with the Nepali Congress. Due to this,Dahal would become Prime Minister until the 2017 Nepalese local elections,after which he would step down in favour of the Nepali Congress.
Renu Dahal is a Nepalese politician and current Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City. She joined the CPN party in 1994 and became full timer member of the party in 1996. Dahal is a daughter of the incumbent Prime Minister and chairman of CPN (MC),Pushpa Kamal Dahal. She was the member of First Constituent Assembly of Nepal.
Communism in Nepal traces its roots back to the pro-democracy movement of 1951,and the subsequent overthrow of the autocratic Rana regime and the establishment of democracy in Nepal. The communist movement in Nepal has split into factions multiple times and multiple factions have come together into a single fold at times as well. It has a history of getting banned from open political discourse,as well as multiple instances of embracing guerrilla insurgency,most notably,the Maoist insurgency in the 1990s and early 2000s that led to the Nepalese Civil War,claiming at least 17,000 lives.
The First Federal Parliament of Nepal,consisting of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly,was elected via the 2017 legislative,provincial and local elections.
General elections were held in Nepal on 20 November 2022 to elect the 275 members of the House of Representatives. There were two ballots in the election;one to elect 165 members from single-member constituencies via FPTP,and the other to elect the remaining 110 members from a single nation-wide constituency via party-list proportional representation.
The Fifth Deuba cabinet was the Government of Nepal from 13 July 2021 to 26 December 2022. It was formed after Sher Bahadur Deuba was appointed as the new prime minister of Nepal by president Bidya Devi Bhandari following an order from the Supreme Court,which declared the dissolution of the House of Representatives on the recommendation of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli to be unlawful. The fifth Deuba cabinet was replaced by the Dahal cabinet,2022 on 26 December 2022,when Pushpa Kamal Dahal's CPN broke away from the electoral alliance with Nepali Congress and joined hands with other opposition parties to form a government in the aftermath of the 2022 general election.
At the end of 2020,a major split in the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) revived the Communist Party of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal.
The Second Federal Parliament of Nepal,was elected by the 2022 general elections on 20 November 2022. The elections elected 275 Members of Parliament (MPs),165 for each constituency and 110 through the party list,to the House of Representatives. The parliament convened for the first time on 9 January 2023.
The Dahal cabinet,2022 is the current Government of Nepal,formed on 26 December 2022 after Pushpa Kamal Dahal was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Nepal by president Bidya Devi Bhandari,following the 2022 Nepalese general election.
