Ram Saran Verma (born 1968) is an Indian farmer recognized for introducing advanced and more profitable farming techniques to small Indian farmers and rural villages in his state. Verma has received numerous Indian farming awards for his work, and his farming techniques have been studied and replicated across his state. In 2019, he was honored India's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri. [1]

Biography

Ram Saran Verman hails from Daulatpur village in Barabanki district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. [2] He dropped out of school in 8th grade and inherited 6 acres of farmland from his father. [2] In 1984, he went on a tour of the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab to interact and learn from successful rural farmers and farming experts in those states. [2] Using this experience, he introduced banana cultivation to his fields, which traditionally grew wheat, rice, sugarcane and mustard, and was one of the first farmers to introduce tissue culture farming in the state of Uttar Pradesh. [2] Ram Saran Verma currently oversees farming on 150 acres of land, which directly and indirectly supports circa 20,000 people. [3] [2] He conducts free training sessions for agriculturalists from around the country. [2]

He has been called the rural "high-tech farmer" by the Indian media, for introducing advanced farming techniques to improve yields in banana, tomato and potato crops for small rural Indian farmers. [4] [2] [5] News18 India reported that at a function in 2012 to honour Ramsharan Verma, former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam called him a "farmer's wizard", and separately, that he had produced "gold from the soil". [6] In 2014, India Today featured Ram Saran Verma as a "Field Revolutionary" and profiled him as one of the "changemakers" influencing India from a micro-level. [7]

He is a recipient of the Jagjivan Ram Kisan Puraskar in 2007 and 2010 and the National Horticultural Award in 2014. [3] [2] [5]

Keshava Parasaran is a lawyer from India. He was Advocate General of Tamil Nadu during the president's rule in 1976, Solicitor General of India under the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Attorney General of India under Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi between 1983 and 1989 until the end of Rajiv's tenure. Parasaran was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 2003 and Padma Vibhushan in the year 2011. The trust oversees the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Madappa Mahadevappa, popularly known as Rice Mahadevappa was an Indian agricultural scientist and plant breeder, renowned for developing high yielding hybrid varieties of rice. He served for more than 55 years and had a glowing career. He served as the Vice-chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad for two terms and his selfless hard work along with broad vision lead to the award of ICAR's SARDAR PATEL OUTSTANDING INSTITUTION award in the year 2000 to UAS, Dharwad. He served as chairman of Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board under Indian Council of Agricultural Research of which he was a member of governing council. As chairman of ASRB, he introduced radical changes to create transparency in recruitment and expedited the process of promotions. This enhanced the talent pool at ICAR system to further contribute to the cause of the agriculture and farming community. He was the recipient of Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Shri and various other accolades.

Haji Kalimullah Khan, popularly known as Mango man, is an Indian horticulturist and fruit breeder, known for his accomplishments in breeding mangoes and other fruits. He is known to have grown over 300 different varieties of mangoes on a single tree, using grafting techniques. Born in Malihabad, near Lucknow in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Khan dropped out of school at 7th standard and took to the family business of farming. Using the asexual propagation technique of grafting, he has developed several new varieties of mangoes, some of which has been named after celebrities and political leader such as Sachin Tendulkar, Aishwarya Rai, Akhilesh Yadav, Sonia Gandhi, Narendra Modi, Amit Shah etc. Anarkali, a variety of mango developed by him is reported to have two different skins and two different layers of pulp, each having a different taste. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to horticulture.

Goriparthi Narasimha Raju Yadav is an Indian farmer, known for his achievements in agricultural farming. Hailing from the Guduru village, in Krishna district, in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, he is reported to have recorded harvests such as 7.5 to 8.3 tonnes of Pusa Basmati 1 rice per hectare, 3 tonnes of black gram per hectare, and 4 to 5 tonnes of groundnut per hectare. He is also known to have grown a horsegram creeper with over 10,000 branches and a mango tree in his farm yielded 22,000 mangoes in a single season. He has been associated with the expert committees of the Indian Rice Development Council (IRDC) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as a member and is a recipient of several awards including Krishaka Ratna, Krishi Ratna, Krishi Samrat and the Jagjivan Ram Kisan Puraskar (1999) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to agriculture.

Kanwal Singh Chauhan is an Indian farmer from Haryana, India. He is known for his contributions to crop diversification in the agriculture industry. In January 2019, he was awarded Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award. He was honoured with N. G.Ranga Farmer Award 2010 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research in August 2011.

Bharat Bhushan Tyagi is an Indian farmer, educator and trainer from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, who was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2019. He organises weekly training for farmers at Bulandshahr and has trained over 80,000 farmers. He is also a recipient of Progressive Farmer Award by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Sundaram Verma is an Indian environmentalist. He was awarded Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award in 2020, for developing the agricultural technique called ‘dryland agroforestry' which was developed to help tree plantation efforts in arid regions of India.

Fareed Mahfooz Kidwai is an Indian politician and a member of 18th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh representing Ram Nagar since March 2022. He is a member of the Samajwadi Party. Kidwai had previously represented Masauli as a member of Bahujan Samaj Party in the 15th, and Kursi in the 16th Uttar Pradesh Assembly as a Samajwadi Party candidate.

Sabarmatee is an Indian conservationist and farmer living in Nayagarh district in the state of Odisha. She works with a non-governmental organization called Sambhav which was visualised by her father Padma Shri Prof Radhamohan that promotes organic farming and conservation of indigenous varieties besides doing many other activities. The achievements of Sabarmatee were recognised in 2018, when she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar and in 2020 with the Padma Shri.
