Jayarama Valayden,most commonly known as Rama Valayden is a Mauritian lawyer,social worker and politician. [1]
He was born in 1963 in Stanley (Rose Hill) Rama Valayden attended primary school Notre Dame des Victoires RCA. [2] He then attended secondary school St. Andrews School in Rose Hill. In 1976 he formed the Sport and Literary Club of Hugnin Road. [3]
Rama Valayden is married to Taslima Valayden and together they had son,Rama Jr. [4]
Just before the 1982 General Elections he launched a movement named Groupement Révolutionnaire Mauricien. [5] [6] Rama Valayden launched a new party Mouvement Républicain in 1996 after distancing himself from the PMSD. He was candidate at the September 1999 by-elections in Constituency No. 20 but he was defeated by his rival Xavier Duval. [7]
At the July 2005 General Elections he was candidate of Alliance Sociale in Constituency No. 19 but he was not elected as rival alliance MSM-MMM won all three seats in that constituency. [8] However he was appointed as Attorney General from 2005 to 2009 as his party MR was in alliance with the winning coalition of PTR-PMXD-VF-MR-MMSM.
At the May 2010 General Elections Rama Valayden was candidate of the PTr-PMSD-MSM coalition but he was not elected. [9]
In preparation for the November 2019 General Elections Rama Valayden was expecting the Labour Party to support his candidacy but this did not eventuate. [10] In the aftermath of Labour Party's poor performance in 2019 Rama Valayden blamed poor leadership and chaos within the party for its repeated defeat. [11]
In 2013 Rama Valayden co-published the book Wrongfully Convicted:Amicale case following the 1999 arson and murders at the gambling house known as "L'Amicale" in Port Louis which were also known as 1999 L'Amicale riots. [12]
He has also written a number of newspaper articles on miscarriage of justice (such as the beheading of political prisoner Ratsitatane),and the need to implement the recommendations of the 2011 Truth and Justice Commission (to repair the ever-lasting consequences of slavery and indentured servitude). [13] Rama Valayden also wrote on environmental issues,such as the disappearance of Baobab and Mapou trees in Mauritius. [14]
Sir Anerood Jugnauth,GCSK,PV,was a Mauritian statesman,politician and barrister who served both as President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was Member of Parliament for Piton &Riviere Du Rempart. A central figure of Mauritian politics in the 1980s and 1990s,he was Leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1982. He served four consecutive terms as prime minister from 1982 to 1995 and again from 2000 to 2003. He was then elected as President from 2003 to 2012. Following his party's victory in the 2014 general elections,he served his sixth and final term as prime minister,becoming the nation's longest serving prime minister with more than 18 years of tenure,overtaking Seewoosagur Ramgoolam,who held the office for 14 years.
Paul Raymond Bérenger is a Mauritian politician who was Prime Minister of Mauritius from 2003 to 2005. He has been Leader of the Opposition on several occasions –from 1983 to 1987,1997 to 2000,2005 to 2006,2007 to 2013,October 2013 to 15 September 2014,and again from December 2014 to December 2016 when he was replaced by Xavier-Luc Duval. Following his party's defeat in the 2014 general elections,he became Leader of the Opposition for the sixth time,making him the longest ever to serve in this constitutional position. He was also deputy prime minister from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2003,and he was a cabinet minister in the government of Anerood Jugnauth in 1982 and 1991. Bérenger,a Christian of Franco-Mauritian descent,has been the only non-Hindu prime minister of Mauritius,or,more particularly,the only prime minister who has not belonged to the Jugnauth or Ramgoolam families.
The Mouvement Militant Mauricien is a left-wing socialist political party in Mauritius. The party was founded by a group of students in the late 1960s. The MMM advocates a "fairer" society,without discrimination on the basis of social class,race,community,caste,religion,gender or sexual orientation.
