The United States Football League (USFL) was a professional American football league that played for three seasons, 1983 through 1985. The league played a spring/summer schedule in each of its active seasons. The 1986 season was scheduled to be played in the autumn/winter, directly competing against the long-established National Football League (NFL). However, the USFL ceased operations before that season was scheduled to begin.

Hanford Dixon is an American former professional football player who spend his entire career (1981–1989) as a cornerback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and was selected by the Browns with the 22nd pick in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft. Dixon made the Pro Bowl three times, in 1986, 1987 and 1988. He also is credited with naming the Cleveland Browns "Dawg Pound," the section of the stadium known for their antics during Browns home games at the old Municipal Stadium inspired by Dixon's "barking" to teammates, especially fellow cornerback Frank Minnifield.

A four-time Pro Bowl selection with the Cleveland Browns, he was named an All-Pro in 1983. He also played for the San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts.

He represented New Zealand in rugby at High School level in 1985. Dixon wore the number 71 while playing and starting for the Vikings as an Offensive Lineman. David had two stints with The Vikings with the second lasting 10 years. He was known as a vital part of the team's Offensive unit, and retired in 2004 after sustaining several injuries.
