Rashida Haque Choudhury (born 24 April 1926, date of death unknown) was an Indian politician who was the Minister of State of Social Welfare in Charan Singh ministry from 1979 to 1980.

Early life

Rashida Haque was born on 24 April 1926 in Tezpur, Assam to Alhaj Nasib Ali Majumdar and his wife. She was educated at a Mission school in Silchar and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata. [1]

Career

Choudhury joined the Indian National Congress (INC) party in 1950. [2] She contested the 1977 Indian general election as an INC candidate from Silchar. Choudhury obtained 1,38,638 votes and defeated Nurul Huda of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by more than 28,000 votes. [3] [4] She served on the Committee of Social Work for Bangladesh Refugees. [2] Later she joined the Indian National Congress (Urs), a breakaway faction of INC and was in 1979, made a Minister of State for Education, Social Welfare and Culture in the Charan Singh ministry. [5] [6]

Choudhury stood for election in 1980 from Silchar. This time, however, she received 46.98% of votes and finished second to INC(I)'s Santosh Mohan Dev (52% votes). [7]

Personal life

Rashida Haque married INC politician Moinul Hoque Choudhury on 28 December 1948, with whom she had one son and three daughters. [2] She is deceased. [8]

General elections were held in India on 3 and 6 January 1980 to elect the members of the 7th Lok Sabha. The Janata Party alliance came into power in the 1977 general elections amidst public anger with the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Emergency. However, its position was weak; the loose coalition barely held on to a majority with only 295 seats in the Lok Sabha and never quite had a firm grip on power. Bharatiya Lok Dal leaders Charan Singh and Jagjivan Ram, who had quit the INC, were members of the Janata alliance but were at loggerheads with Prime Minister Morarji Desai. The tribunals the government had set up to investigate human rights abuses during the Emergency appeared vindictive.

K. U. Barbhuiya, also known by his Saju is an Indian All India United Democratic Front politician and businessman. He has been serving as a Member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Sonai since 2021.
