Ratu Techi (born 1965) is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh. [1] He is an MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party from Sagalee Assembly Constituency in Papum Pare district. He was elected to the 2024 Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election unopposed. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Techi was born in Rigo village but lives in Nimte village of Papum Pare district. [4] He studied in government schools in Sagalee and Doimukh. Later, he did engineering and joined the government as Assistant Engineer in Public Works Department of Arunachal Pradesh in 1989. He was an active ABVP leader for many years. [4] In 2019, he took voluntary retirement as superintendent of engineering to enter politics. He was a recipient of National Talent Research Organisation scholarship during middle school. [1]

Career

Techi was elected unopposed to the Sagalee Assembly Constituency representing Bharatiya Janata Party. [5] He is one among the 10 BJP candidates who were elected unopposed as MLAs in the 2024 Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. [6] [7] He is the first BJP MLA in the Sagalee seat which was dominated by Indian National Congress MLAs from 1991. [1] Nabam Tuki, former chief minister and a five-time Congress MLA from Sagalee, preferred to contest the Lok Sabha election this time. [8]

"I wanted to join politics to give something back to society. I come from a very poor economic background and have worked hard to reach where I am now. I will try my best to ensure that many more poor kids come out of poverty through proper education and support," Techi told Arunachal Times newspaper. [1]

Starting April 2015, the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh underwent a political crisis. The Indian National Congress party in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly was divided between sporters of the serving Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and spotters of Kalikho Pul. In 2016, the President's rule was imposed ending Tuki's tenure as the chief minister. In February 2016, Kalikho Pul became the Chief Minister when 14 disqualified MLAs were reinstated by the Supreme Court. On 13 July 2016, the Supreme Court quashed the Arunachal Pradesh Governor J.P. Rajkhowa’s order to advance the Assembly session from 14 January 2016 to 16 December 2015, which resulted in President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh. As a result, Tuki was restored as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 13 July 2016. But hours before proving majority, he resigned as the Chief Minister on 16 July 2016. He was succeeded by Pema Khandu, who in September 2016 left the INC and joined People's Party of Arunachal along with majority MLAs. He further joined BJP in December 2016 along with majority MLAs.

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Arunachal Pradesh on 19 April 2024 to elect the 60 members of the 11th Arunachal Pradesh Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 2 June 2024 the Bharatiya Janata Party has won the election massively with 46 out of 60 seats and Pema Khandu sworn in as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third time.

Nabam Vivek is an Indian politician from Arunachal Pradesh belonging to the People's Party of Arunachal. He is a member of the Legislative Assembly in the 11th Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
