Rawlins County USD 105 is a public unified school district headquartered in Atwood, Kansas, United States. [1] The district includes the communities of Atwood, Herndon, Blakeman, Ludell, and nearby rural areas. [2]

In 1945 (after World War II), the School Reorganization Act in Kansas caused the consolidation of thousands of rural school districts in Kansas. [4]
In 1963, the School Unification Act in Kansas caused the further consolidatation of thousands of tiny school districts into hundreds of larger Unified School Districts. [5]
It was formed in 2003 by the consolidation of Herndon USD 317 and Atwood USD 318. [6]
On June 5, 2023, a fire was intentionally set at the Rawlins County Junior-Senior High School, causing extensive damage and injuring 10 firefighters. Following the fire, an engineer deemed the building unsafe, leading to its demolition, which began on June 10, 2024. Two juveniles were convicted of arson related to the incident. [7] In a August 2024, voters in Rawlins County approved a $29.9 million bond issue and a 1% countywide sales tax to finance the construction of a new K-12 school building and improvements to district facilities. The total project cost is estimated at $39.9 million, with plans to complete the 7-12 grade portion by January 2026. [8]

Herndon High School is a former high school located in Herndon, Kansas, U.S., which served students in grades 9–12. Herndon High School was the only high school within the city limits of Herndon, Kansas. The school colors were blue and yellow and the school mascot was a Beaver. The average annual enrollment was approximately 200 students from several communities. Herndon High School was established in either 1912 or 1915. A new building was erected in the spring of 1917 because of the growing population of the city. In 1923, Herndon High School became Herndon Rural High School District #2. The school was rebuilt in 1949 and classes were held at St. Mary's High School. Classes resumed at the rebuilt high school in 1950. This remained until the fall of 2003 when the decision was made to consolidate with Atwood USD #318. The new district that was formed is now Unified School District #105 and Rawlins County Junior-Senior High School.
