Raymond "Tank" Austin was an American baseball pitcher in the Negro leagues. [1] He played with the Nashville Elite Giants and Birmingham Black Barons in 1930 and the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1932. [2]
Austin started the first game of the 1930 Negro National League season for the Nashville Elite Giants. He was relieved by Rosey McCauley in a losing effort against the St. Louis Stars. [3]
His final recorded game came with the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1932,when he faced the Montgomery Grey Sox on June 19,1932. [4] He pitched either four or five innings,depending on the source,in a losing effort. [5]
The first Negro National League (NNL) was one of the several Negro leagues that were established during the period in the United States when organized baseball was segregated. The league was formed in 1920 with former player Rube Foster as its president.
James Robert "Red" Moore was an American professional baseball first baseman. Moore was a player in the Negro leagues,appearing with several different teams including his hometown Atlanta Black Crackers. He also served with three different All-Star teams and,in 1938,played with the Southern News Services All-American Negro League Baseball Team. In 2006,he was inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. Listed at 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) and 180 pounds (82 kg),he batted and threw left-handed.
The Negro Southern League (NSL) was one of the several Negro baseball leagues created during the time organized baseball was segregated. The NSL was organized as a minor league in 1920 and lasted until 1936. It was considered a major league for the 1932 season and it was also the only organized league to finish its full schedule that season. Prior to the season,several established teams joined the NSL,mainly from the collapsed Negro National League.
The Montgomery Grey Sox were a Negro Southern League (NSL) baseball team based in Montgomery,Alabama. While the NSL was regarded as a minor league throughout most of its existence,with the collapse of the first Negro National League in 1931,the league is considered a major league for that one season.
Cornelius Randall Robinson,known professionally as Neil Robinson,was a professional major league baseball player in the segregated Negro leagues. Also known by the nicknames Neil (Neal) and Shadow,he primarily played as a center fielder in the 1930s and 1940s,but as a semipro player he also alternated between a shortstop,third baseman,and a left fielder. For the majority of his twenty-three year career,Robinson played for the Memphis Red Sox. Prior to being acquired by Memphis,he played one season for the Homestead Grays and several seasons with the Cincinnati Tigers.
Felix Evans Jr.,nicknamed "Chin",was an American baseball pitcher in the Negro leagues. Known for his curveball,Evans played from 1934 to 1949 with several teams,most prominently for the Memphis Red Sox.
Merven John "Red" Ryan,born Mervin Ferguson,was an American baseball pitcher in the Negro leagues. He played from 1915 to 1932 with several teams,playing mostly with the Hilldale Club.
The Memphis Red Sox were an American Negro league baseball team that was active from 1920 to 1959. Originally named the Barber College Baseball Club,the team was initially owned and operated by Arthur P. Martin,a local Memphis barber. In the late 1920s the Martin brothers,all three Memphis doctors and businessmen,purchased the Red Sox. J. B. Martin,W. S. Martin,and B. B. Martin,would retain control of the club till its dissolution in 1959. The Red Sox played as members,at various times,of the Negro Southern League,Negro National League,and Negro American League. The team was never a titan of the Negro leagues like wealthier teams in northern cities of the United States,but sound management lead to a continuous thirty-nine years of operation,a span that was exceeded by very few other teams. Following integration the team had five players that would eventually make the rosters of Major League Baseball teams and two players that were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
