Real Mex Restaurants is the parent company for several chains of full-service Mexican restaurants in the United States. The company is headquartered in Cypress, California and operates more than 120 full service Mexican restaurants under eight brand names. [1]

Mexican cuisine culinary traditions of Mexico

Mexican cuisine began about 9,000 years ago, when agricultural communities such as the Maya formed, domesticating maize, creating the standard process of corn nixtamalization, and establishing their foodways. Successive waves of other Mesoamerican groups brought with them their own cooking methods. These included the Olmec, Teotihuacanos, Toltec, Huastec, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi, Purépecha, Totonac, Mazatec, and Mazahua.

History

The company claims its origin to Larry Cano who, in 1954 with the opening of the first El Torito restaurant, which expanded into a chain. Another origin was the founding of Acapulco Mexican Restaurant and Cantina in 1960. In 1998, Acapulco became owned by the private equity firm Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co., [2] which expanded it into Real Mex Restaurants, acquiring El Torito, Chevy's Fresh Mex and other Mexican full-service chains. [3] The company's reach is now nationwide, and the company claims to be the largest Mexican restaurant chain in the United States. [4]

El Torito is a Mexican restaurant chain, consisting of 69 restaurants which are located primarily in California. Some of the restaurants are located in Oregon, Arizona, and overseas. El Torito is one of several Mexican cuisine restaurant chains operated by Real Mex Restaurants.

Acapulco Mexican Restaurant and Cantina is a restaurant chain founded in 1960 in Pasadena, California. They currently have restaurants in California and Oregon. The restaurant chain is owned by Real Mex Restaurants which is headquartered in Cypress, California. There are currently 14 restaurants.

Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co.

Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co. is an American private equity firm focused on growth capital investments in middle-market companies in the consumer products, specialty retail and restaurant sectors.

In October 2011, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. [5] In February 2012, it was sold to a group of debt holders. [6] The company is now owned by an investment group that includes Z Capital Partners. [7]

Real Mex Restaurants portfolio includes: El Torito, Acapulco Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, Chevy's Fresh Mex, El Torito Grill, El Paso Cantina, Who Song and Larry's and the Southern California landmark Las Brisas of Laguna Beach.

The chain's headquarters are currently located in Cypress, California. The chain was owned by Real Mex Restaurants, Inc. until its August 7, 2018 bankruptcy and acquisition by Z Capital and Tennenbaum Capital Partners.

Baja Fresh

Baja Fresh is a chain of fast-casual Tex Mex restaurants founded in Newbury Park, California in 1990 and headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona and is owned by Canadian franchisor MTY Food Group. The chain emphasizes fresh ingredients, and each restaurant features a self-serve salsa bar.

Taco Bueno is a U.S.-based, fast-food restaurant chain specializing in Tex-Mex-style Mexican cuisine. The company is headquartered in Irving, Texas, in the Dallas Fort Worth metro area. Its first location opened in Abilene, Texas in 1967. The food chain has locations in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Alabama and Texas. The chain has more than 160 restaurants.

Don Pablo’s is a chain of Tex-Mex restaurants founded in Lubbock, Texas, in 1985. The menu features Tex-Mex items, made-from-scratch salsa, tortillas and sauces, and a range of other Mexican specialties. At one time, this chain had as many as 120 locations throughout the United States and was the second largest full-service Mexican restaurant chain within the United States during the late 1990s, second only to Chi-Chi's. The chain had 34 restaurants in 14 states when it was acquired in 2014 by Food Management Partners.
