Robert Lee Gill Jr. (born September 21, 1989), better known by his stage name Reason, is an American rapper and songwriter. He is signed to hip hop record label Top Dawg Entertainment, where he started to gain recognition. His TDE debut, There You Have It , was released on September 28, 2018; a re-release of an album from 2017. [1] His major label debut album New Beginnings was released on October 9, 2020. [2]
Reason released his first mixtape, In The Meantime, on January 1, 2015. [3] On January 16, 2016, he released his next mixtape titled The Free Album, while releasing a compilation mixtape called The Proof on his SoundCloud later in 2016. [4] On February 9, 2018, he was featured on the Top Dawg Entertainment produced film soundtrack for the Marvel Studios superhero film Black Panther (2018), titled Black Panther: The Album , on the song "Seasons". On August 8, it was announced that he was signed to TDE. That same day, he released a single titled "The Soul", with a music video released the next week. [6] On August 29, he released the second single titled "Better Dayz", a song that had already made an appearance on his first mixtape. [7] On September 11, he released the third single titled "Summer Up", also accompanied by a music video. [8] He was also featured on Los Angeles rapper JAG's album with Cozz on "Black Boy Rise". He is also scheduled to go on tour with Jay Rock on the "Big Redemption Tour". Reason released his mixtape, There You Have It , on September 28, 2018. [9] The album was originally released on May 19, 2017, but upon signing with TDE, the label decided to re-release the album. [10]
On January 6, 2019, it was announced that Reason was invited to the Dreamville recording sessions for the compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers III . [11] He later announced that he will be joining the first leg of JID's "Catch Me If You Can Tour". [12]
On February 14, 2020, Reason announced the title of his album New Beginnings . [13] On April 24, as part of Top Dawg Entertainment's Fan Appreciation Week, Reason released the song "Might Not Make It". [14] On October 9, 2020, Reason released the album New Beginnings. He explained the album's delay: "I had to get rid of every fear, anxiety, doubt, and negative mindset to make this project". [15]
In an interview, Reason named Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Eminem, Fabolous, and Lupe Fiasco as his inspirations and favorite hip hop artists. [16]

Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr., better known by his stage name Jay Rock, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. He signed to indie label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), in 2005. Under TDE, Rock secured a record deal in 2007 with Warner Bros. Records and later Asylum Records, but mergers fell through and Rock departed from the label shortly after. He then signed with fellow American rapper Tech N9ne's Strange Music, in a joint-venture deal with TDE. Apart from his solo career, Rock is also known for being a member of the hip hop supergroup Black Hippy, alongside fellow West Coast rappers and TDE label-mates Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul.
Jermaine Lamarr Cole is an American rapper and record producer. Born on a military base in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Cole initially gained recognition as a rapper following the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in early 2007. Hanley is also a member of the hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy, alongside label-mates and fellow California-based rappers Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar.
Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) is an American independent record label founded in 2004, by CEO Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith. Terrence "Punch" Henderson is president of the label. There are currently eleven artists signed to the label: the label's flagship artists, Black Hippy members Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q, as well as Isaiah Rashad, SZA, Lance Skiiiwalker, SiR, Reason, Zacari, Ray Vaughn, and Doechii. Raised in Carson, California, he signed to indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2007, where he eventually formed West Coast hip hop group Black Hippy, alongside fellow California-based rappers Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q. He is perhaps most known for his introspective lyrics and his five independent albums under TDE, Longterm Mentality, Control System, These Days..., Do What Thou Wilt., and Herbert, which were all released to positive reviews and commercial success.
Digi+Phonics is an African American hip hop production team, composed of California-based record producers Tae Beast, Sounwave, Dave Free and Willie B. They currently serve as the main in-house producers for Carson-based record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. Digi+Phonics work significantly on projects from all the members of hip hop supergroup Black Hippy, who are also signed to Top Dawg and is composed of rappers Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. Their best known productions include "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" by Kendrick Lamar, "There He Go" by Schoolboy Q, and "Terrorist Threats" by Ab-Soul. They frequently co-produce songs together and put the finishing touches on the projects released by Top Dawg Entertainment.
